Description
Professor Tomoe, whose full name is Souichi Tomoe, is a central figure in the anime Sailor Moon S. He is introduced as a famous scientist, the founder and owner of Mugen Academy, and the father of Hotaru Tomoe. He is also a widower, having lost his wife Keiko in a fire at his laboratory. The same accident left his young daughter severely injured. In order to save both their lives, Tomoe allowed himself to be possessed by an alien entity called Germatoid and permitted his daughter to become the host of another entity, Mistress 9. From that point on, he acted as the possessed leader of the Death Busters, the antagonistic organization of the season.
In appearance, Tomoe is a refined man in his mid-thirties with white hair and glasses, and he is almost always dressed in a white laboratory coat. His eyes are described as hollow and dark, giving him an unsettling look that matches his eerie behavior. In the anime, he displays bizarre and highly over-dramatic mannerisms that often serve as a source of unexpected humor. It is never made clear whether these behaviors come from the possessing entity or from repressed aspects of his own personality. At certain moments, his true nature breaks through, revealing a gentle and loving father who cares deeply for his daughter.
Tomoe's central motivation is tied to the goals of the Death Busters, who seek to gain control of a force that they believe can erase all good from the world. The key to this plan lies in Heart Crystals, which are stolen from humans by the Daimons, creatures that Tomoe creates in his laboratory. Initially, the Daimons are used to hunt for three particular hearts that contain the Talismans, which would ultimately reveal the Holy Grail. When that strategy fails, Tomoe shifts to a second plan: using the energy of the collected Heart Crystals to awaken Mistress 9, the entity residing within his own daughter, so that she may summon Pharaoh 90 and bring about destruction. It is his assistant Kaorinite who eventually finds the breakthrough needed to revive Mistress 9.
Within the story, Tomoe operates from Mugen Academy, directing the Death Busters and overseeing the Daimon attacks that drive the season's conflict. His position as a respected scientist and academy owner gives him cover while he works toward the group's aims. His role also places him at the center of a tragic personal conflict, since his daughter Hotaru is unknowingly carrying the very being he is trying to awaken. His relationship with Hotaru is the most significant one in his life, and moments of genuine tenderness toward her contrast sharply with his otherwise cold and theatrical villainy. His connection to Mikuji and his deceased wife Keiko also define his past, while his working relationship with Kaorinite forms the main partnership within the Death Busters.
Tomoe's defining abilities are rooted in his scientific genius. He is a brilliant geneticist capable of creating Daimons from laboratory cultures, and he commands the resources and technology of Mugen Academy to support the Death Busters' operations. As a host for Germatoid, he also embodies a force alien to the human world, though the anime leaves it ambiguous how much of his unnatural demeanor belongs to the entity rather than to the man himself.
By the end of Sailor Moon S, the defeat of the Death Busters leaves Tomoe seriously injured and suffering from partial amnesia. He no longer remembers any of his activities as a leader of the Death Busters and is shown in a hospital, confined to a wheelchair, having taken on the task of raising Hotaru, who has been reborn as an infant. In a final appearance in the following season, his condition has improved considerably: he is without his wheelchair and no longer wears his glasses. He willingly hands baby Hotaru over to Sailor Pluto, behaving as though he understands her destiny as Sailor Saturn. After this quiet departure from the story, he is not seen again.
