Description
Haruka Tenou is the civilian identity of Sailor Uranus, a Sailor Guardian who first appears in the Sailor Moon S story arc. She is a student at the prestigious Mugen Academy, which she and her partner attend undercover to investigate enemy activity. Haruka is sixteen years old and lives a life of comfort among the Tokyo elite, with no known relatives. She is a prodigy in the world of motorsports, an accomplished race car and motorcycle driver, who also excels in track and other athletic pursuits.

In both her civilian life and as a guardian, Haruka is characterized by her strong-willed, serious, and fiercely independent nature. She has a powerful and often intimidating presence, preferring to act quickly and decisively rather than deliberating at length. Her androgynous appearance is a notable trait; she wears her hair short and typically dons masculine clothing, including the boys' uniform at Mugen Academy, which leads many characters, including the Inner Sailor Guardians, to initially mistake her for a handsome young man. True to her tomboyish persona, she refers to herself using the masculine pronoun "boku" in Japanese. While she can appear cold, suspicious of others, and even morally ambiguous, she is unwaveringly loyal to those she trusts.

The driving motivation for Haruka and her partner, Michiru Kaiou (Sailor Neptune), is to find the three talismans that are hidden within the pure heart crystals of certain individuals. Their primary goal is to prevent the arrival of a world-ending catastrophe known as The Silence. This mission defines their role in the story as the Outer Guardians, who act as a first line of defense for the solar system, operating largely independently from Sailor Moon and the Inner Guardians. Their methods are often pragmatic and ruthless, as they are willing to sacrifice the lives of innocent people if it means obtaining a talisman and preventing a greater disaster, a stance that creates significant friction with the more idealistic Sailor Moon.

The most significant relationship in Haruka's life is with Michiru Kaiou, who is both her romantic partner and her partner in battle. The bond between Uranus and Neptune is extremely close, and they are almost never seen apart. Together with Setsuna Meiou (Sailor Pluto), they form a tight-knit unit among the Outer Guardians. Their relationship is a canonical lesbian romance, a fact confirmed by series creator Naoko Takeuchi. Haruka also shares a notable connection with the protagonist, Usagi Tsukino (Sailor Moon). While she is initially dismissive and distrustful of Sailor Moon's abilities and philosophy, she ultimately comes to deeply respect her as her princess. In the final story arc, Haruka, along with Michiru and Setsuna, forms a surrogate family with a reborn Hotaru Tomoe (Sailor Saturn), to whom Haruka is a protective parental figure.

Haruka undergoes subtle but significant development throughout the series. Initially, she and Michiru are presented as antagonists to the Inner Guardians due to their conflicting methods, but a slow-burning understanding eventually builds between the two groups, and they learn to work together. Her pragmatic and sometimes cold exterior is shown to be a necessary resolve for the burden of her mission, a resolve strong enough that she is prepared to sacrifice even her own life or the life of the person she loves most. In the Sailor Stars arc, this resolve is tested when she and Michiru feign allegiance to the villain Sailor Galaxia in a desperate gamble to destroy her from within.

As Sailor Uranus, Haruka possesses formidable physical strength and is often considered one of the most powerful Sailor Guardians in direct combat. Her primary elemental attack is World Shaking, an immensely powerful technique where she slams her fist into the ground to unleash a massive, planet-shaped energy wave at her target. She is also the keeper of the Space Sword, one of the three talismans; her signature weapon attack is Space Sword Blaster, which releases a wave of energy from the blade to destroy her enemies. Her transformation and attack phrases include references to the planet's power, such as "Uranus Planet Power". Her affinity as a guardian is with the sky and air, and her abilities reflect her swift and direct fighting style.
