Description
Mariana Kaioh, known in her civilian identity as Mariana Kaioh and as the Sailor Guardian Sailor Neptune, is a fictional character from the Sailor Moon S season of the Sailor Moon anime series. She is introduced alongside her partner Haruka Tenoh as a mysterious and powerful warrior, later revealed to be one of the Outer Sailor Guardians tasked with protecting the solar system from external threats. Her civilian name is Michiru Kaiou in the original Japanese version, and the Portuguese adaptation uses Mariana Kaioh.

Mariana is a student at Mugen Academy, an elite school for exceptionally intelligent and talented individuals. She is portrayed as a young woman of remarkable grace, elegance, and sophistication. She possesses numerous artistic talents: she is an internationally acclaimed violinist, a skilled painter, and a sculptor. She is also an accomplished swimmer. Her demeanor is typically calm, polite, and composed, giving an impression of perfection. However, beneath this serene exterior, she can display sharp anger and a cold, ruthless side when her duty as a Sailor Guardian demands it. She dislikes being patronized and is not overly social, though she is kind. Her intelligence is evident, and she often uses her artistic sensitivity to perceive deeper truths.

Mariana’s primary motivation is her unwavering commitment to her role as Sailor Neptune. She believes in a black-and-white approach to protecting the world, and she and Haruka are willing to make harsh sacrifices for the greater good. This includes a willingness to eliminate anyone who possesses one of the three Talismans, even if it means turning against allies. Their goal in Sailor Moon S is to locate the three pure hearts containing the Talismans before the Death Busters do, as the Talismans can form the Holy Grail, a powerful artifact.

In the story, Mariana and Haruka initially operate independently, secretly intervening in battles when a pure heart does not contain a Talisman. They later ally with Sailor Moon and the Inner Guardians, though they maintain a certain distance due to their more pragmatic and morally complex approach. Mariana’s role is that of a guardian of the deep seas and an outer-system sentinel, more experienced than the inner guardians but not necessarily stronger in all respects.

Her key relationship is with Haruka Tenoh (Sailor Uranus). The two are inseparable partners and lovers, living together in an apartment in Tokyo. Their bond is one of deep devotion and mutual trust; Mariana often risks her life for Haruka, and Haruka reciprocates completely. They share a secret understanding and frequently devise strategies without revealing their full plans to the others. Mariana also respects Sailor Pluto and later cares for the reborn Hotaru Tomoe (Sailor Saturn), though she initially sees her as a potential threat. Her interactions with the Inner Guardians are cordial but reserved, with a notable respect for Ami Mizuno’s intelligence and a certain fondness for Mamoru Chiba.

Throughout Sailor Moon S, Mariana develops by learning to trust the other guardians more, though she never fully abandons her independent judgment. In the subsequent Sailor Stars season, she and Haruka stage a temporary betrayal of Sailor Moon in order to infiltrate the forces of Sailor Galaxia, ultimately sacrificing themselves to try to stop Galaxia before being revived. Mariana’s character also evolves as she acquires the Deep Aqua Mirror, a Talisman that reveals the truth, and later gains the ability to transform into Super Sailor Neptune, increasing her power.

Notable abilities include her transformation phrase “Neptune Planet Power, Make Up” (or later “Neptune Crystal Power, Make Up”). As Sailor Neptune, she commands ocean-based powers, specifically saltwater and deep-sea forces, as opposed to Sailor Mercury’s freshwater and ice attacks. Her signature attack is Deep Submerge (also known as Mergulho Profundo), a powerful torrent of ocean water. After obtaining her Talisman, she learns Submarine Reflection (Reflexo Submarino), a more advanced attack. She also possesses precognitive abilities, often sensing danger through her intuition or her connection to the sea. Her Talisman, the Deep Aqua Mirror, allows her to see the truth hidden in any situation. In civilian form, she has no special powers except her precognitive gift.

Mariana’s personal preferences include a love of sashimi (raw fish) and a dislike for kikurage mushrooms and sea cucumbers. Her favorite color is marine blue, and she enjoys all classes, especially music and swimming. She has a playful side, often teasing Haruka, and she values her independence and her art above all, though her destiny as a warrior takes precedence.
