Description
Chibi Usa, also known by her guardian identity Sailor Chibimoon, is a pivotal character introduced during the Sailor Moon S storyline as a young girl from the 30th century. She is the future daughter of Usagi Tsukino and Mamoru Chiba, who in her time are the rulers of Crystal Tokyo as Neo-Queen Serenity and King Endymion. Her full title is Princess Usagi Small Lady Serenity, though she is called Chibi Usa, meaning "small rabbit," to distinguish her from her mother. Despite her chronological age of over 900 years, she has the physical appearance and personality of a young child because her growth halted while her heart and powers as a Sailor Guardian remained immature.
By the time of Sailor Moon S, Chibi Usa has returned to the 20th century after the events of the Black Moon conflict. Her primary motivation this time is not to seek help for a crisis but to train and grow stronger as a Sailor Guardian. Her mother, Neo-Queen Serenity, sent her back to live with her past self specifically to learn how to become a proper soldier, make friends her own age, and mature both emotionally and physically. She carries a deep longing for friendship, having been a lonely child in the future with few companions besides the guardian Sailor Pluto and her toy Luna-P.
In terms of personality, Chibi Usa is energetic, outgoing, and strong-willed, though she can also be spoiled and prone to bickering, especially with her mother. Her relationship with Usagi is central to her character; they constantly argue over small matters, compete for Mamoru's attention, and behave more like squabbling sisters than a mother and daughter. However, beneath this rivalry lies a secret admiration and deep love. When truly frightened or in danger, Chibi Usa instinctively calls for Usagi, revealing her genuine trust and affection. She is also known for her precocious and sometimes awkward infatuation with her own father's past self, Mamoru, whom she affectionately calls Mamo-chan, much to Usagi's frustration. This attraction is directed at his younger, more dashing persona rather than her mature father in the future.
Her role in the Sailor Moon S narrative is that of an apprentice and a bridge between the inner circle of Guardians and the newly emerging outer Guardians. As she begins her training, she officially awakens as Sailor Chibimoon. Her civilian outfit remains her signature pink hair styled into two odango buns that resemble rabbit ears. Her most significant contribution to the story is her friendship with the lonely and sickly Hotaru Tomoe. Chibi Usa reaches out to Hotaru without judgment, offering her the genuine companionship she has always wanted. This bond becomes crucial, as Hotaru is secretly host to the powerful and destructive Sailor Saturn, as well as the entity Mistress 9. Through her unconditional care for Hotaru, Chibi Usa demonstrates her most powerful trait: her capacity for love and friendship, which ultimately helps save her friend.
Throughout the season, Chibi Usa undergoes notable development. She becomes noticeably less bratty than in her first appearance and shows a growing sense of responsibility as a guardian-in-training. She works alongside the Sailor Guardians to battle the new enemies known as the Death Busters and the Witches 5. Her primary relationship continues to be with Usagi, who acts as her reluctant caretaker and fellow fighter, but her bond with Hotaru becomes equally important. She also encounters for the first time the outer Guardians, Sailors Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto, and is overjoyed to be reunited with the reincarnated Setsuna Meioh, Sailor Pluto, who was her closest confidante in the future.
As a fighter, Sailor Chibimoon's abilities in Sailor Moon S are notably less destructive than those of the other Guardians, reflecting her novice status. She uses the transformation phrase Moon Prism Power, Make Up to don her pink and red sailor uniform. Her signature attack is the Pink Sugar Heart Attack, which she performs with her Moon Rod. In this season, this attack is largely ineffective against enemies and often serves as a minor distraction or creates small heart-shaped fireworks rather than causing real damage. However, she is capable of combining her power with Sailor Moon to perform a stronger combo attack known as the Double Rainbow Moon Heart Ache. Despite her current weakness, it is understood that she possesses immense untapped power that will grow as she matures, and she is the rightful heir to the future Silver Crystal.
