Description
Pumbukin, also rendered as Panbukin in some English adaptations and as Shugesh in the Funimation dub, is a Saiyan warrior who serves in the Saiyan Army under the Frieza Force and belongs to the elite squad led by Bardock. His Japanese name, Panbūkin, is a pun on the word pumpkin, a naming convention that matches the Saiyan tradition of being named after vegetables, and his rounded, bulky silhouette plays on that meaning. He has a robust physique, a thick mustache, and hair styled with parted bangs. In early design stages the character was conceived with a tall, heavily muscled frame similar to Nappa, but the final design gave him a more rotund and distinctive appearance so that the Saiyan characters would be more easily distinguishable from one another.
As a lower-class Saiyan soldier, Pumbukin carries out planetary conquest missions for the Frieza Force without questioning their purpose. He is loyal to Frieza and even expresses gratitude for the steady work the organization provides, treating violent assignments as routine employment. He has a short temper and a combative, brash manner typical of Saiyan warriors. During the destruction of Planet Kanassa, he fights in his Great Ape form, and when a Kanassan warrior cuts his cheek with a ki blast, he becomes enraged and immediately crushes the attacker under his foot. Despite his aggressive temperament, he shows loyalty to his comrades; later in the same campaign, when a surviving Kanassan attacks Bardock from behind, Pumbukin is the first to react and sends the would-be assassin flying with a powerful kick.
His motivations are rooted in duty and allegiance to the Saiyan military hierarchy. He accepts assignments from Frieza without hesitation, values the steady work, and fights fiercely alongside his teammates, but he never questions the broader political situation facing the Saiyans.
In the story of the television special Dragon Ball Z: Bardock - The Father of Goku, Pumbukin appears as one of the supporting members of Bardock's team, accompanying Bardock, Toma, Toteppo, and Selipa on the invasions of Planet Kanassa and Planet Meat. After the squad completes its work on Planet Meat, Frieza orders his subordinate Dodoria and his elite soldiers to eliminate the Saiyan team. Pumbukin is the first of the group to be killed in this betrayal, an event that marks the beginning of the squad's downfall and directly sets the stage for Bardock's confrontation with Frieza.
