Movie
Description
Lady Clarisse de Cagliostro is the princess and the sole remaining member of the ruling light line of the Grand Duchy of Cagliostro, a small European country. As a young woman, she is depicted with short auburn hair, blue eyes, and fair skin. Her upbringing has left her sheltered from the wider world, contributing to a gentle, kind, and sweet nature. Despite this naivete, she possesses a surprising inner strength and courage when faced with threats to herself or those she cares about.

Her primary motivation throughout the story is to escape a forced marriage to Count Cagliostro, the regent who rules in her place and intends to use the marriage to gain full control of the family’s ancient treasure. The treasure can only be accessed with two signet rings, one belonging to the Count and the other to Clarisse. She is also motivated by a desire to protect the secret of her family’s legacy and to reclaim her freedom.

Clarisse’s role in the story is that of the damsel in distress, but she is far from passive. She initially attempts to flee the castle on her own, and after being recaptured, she actively cooperates with Lupin III and his allies. Her most significant act is offering the Count her ring in exchange for Lupin’s life when he is wounded, showing her willingness to sacrifice her own interests for others. She also serves as the key to unlocking the hidden Roman ruins beneath the castle—the true treasure of Cagliostro.

Her key relationship is with Lupin III, whom she met ten years earlier when she nursed him back to health after his first failed attempt to find the treasure. This past encounter creates an emotional bond, and Lupin is driven to rescue her out of gratitude and affection. Clarisse comes to trust him completely and even expresses a readiness to become a thief and leave her royal life behind. However, Lupin gently rejects her offer, believing she belongs as the ruler of her country. She also interacts with other members of Lupin’s crew—Jigen, Goemon, and Fujiko Mine, who assists in her rescue—and is caught between the Count’s malice and the protection of Lupin’s gang.

Over the course of the film, Clarisse develops from a frightened, trapped princess into a courageous young woman who takes decisive action. She shows growth by standing up to the Count and by accepting her destiny as the rightful ruler of Cagliostro after the Count’s defeat. Her final farewell to Lupin is bittersweet, marking her transition from a victim to a sovereign.

In terms of notable abilities, Clarisse does not possess combat skills or physical prowess. Her strengths lie in her resilience, her emotional intelligence, and her inherited knowledge of the castle’s secrets, particularly the function of the signet ring and the mechanism that drains the lake. Her lineage itself gives her the right to rule and the unique position to activate the treasure.
