Description
Princess Clarisse de Cagliostro is the young princess of the Grand Duchy of Cagliostro, a small European nation, and the daughter of the late Grand Duke. As the last surviving member of the noble Cagliostro family, she is the rightful heiress to the duchy. After the death of her parents, she spent part of her childhood in a convent and grew up away from the castle. She later came under the guardianship of Count Cagliostro, a distant relative serving as the country's regent, who brought her back to the castle and pressured her into marrying him so that he could claim the Cagliostro family fortune and unlock its legendary hidden treasure.

Clarisse is a beautiful young woman with short auburn hair, blue eyes, and fair skin. Her personality is defined by kindness, gentleness, and a caring nature, and she is admired by the citizens of Cagliostro. Having spent much of her life isolated from the world, she is naive about how the outside world works, but she shows surprising strength of character, courage, and a willingness to act in defense of what she holds dear. She is humble, compassionate, and able to connect with people from different backgrounds.

Her central motivation is to escape the forced marriage to Count Cagliostro, who needs her ancestral ring to unlock the treasure of the Cagliostro family. Her desire for freedom, and later her concern for the safety of those who help her, guide her choices throughout the story. At the start of the story she appears as a runaway bride fleeing the Count's men, and she is rescued by Lupin III, a master thief who has arrived in Cagliostro while investigating a trail of counterfeit money. During the chase she leaves her signet ring behind, which allows Lupin to recognize her as the princess of Cagliostro.

The bond between Clarisse and Lupin is central to her character. About ten years before the main events, a young Clarisse nursed a seriously injured Lupin back to health after his first failed attempt to infiltrate the castle, so their connection is built on mutual rescue rather than a one-way act of salvation. She views Lupin as her savior and develops deep feelings for him, while he behaves toward her with protective gentleness. In the final act, she tells him she does not want him to leave and even expresses her readiness to become a thief like him, but Lupin gently refuses and leaves her behind so that she can build her own future. Her relationship with Count Cagliostro, by contrast, is defined by fear and coercion, as he keeps her confined and treats their marriage purely as a political and economic transaction. Fujiko Mine, who infiltrates the castle disguised as a lady-in-waiting and tutor, acts as a temporary protector and mentor to Clarisse and provides information that assists in her rescue.

Over the course of the story, Clarisse develops from a helpless captive who depends on being rescued into a young woman willing to risk her life for her own freedom and for the people she cares about. In the climax, she attempts to sacrifice herself by dragging the Count down with her in order to save Lupin, who is about to fall, marking her transformation into an autonomous person who makes her own choices. After the Count's downfall, she remains in Cagliostro as its rightful ruler, having found the strength to lead her country. She does not possess any combat or supernatural abilities; her notable qualities are her courage, compassion, resilience, and her knowledge of the family's ring legend, which she shares with Lupin and which ultimately helps him understand the secret hidden within the castle's clock tower.
