Description
Arsene Lupin III is a master thief and the charismatic protagonist of Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro. He is introduced as the world's most wanted gentleman thief, known for his cleverness, audacity, and a flair for the dramatic that includes leaving calling cards at the scenes of his heists. While his original manga counterpart was a more ruthless and morally questionable character, the version seen in The Castle of Cagliostro is a mischievous and charming rogue, often described as a gentleman with an emphasis on chivalry. This version of Lupin is older and wiser, reflecting on his past with a sense of regret, viewing his younger self as a reckless punk.

Lupin's primary motivation is the thrill of the challenge rather than the material value of the treasures he seeks. He enjoys the process of planning and executing a heist for its own sake, and he is not overly upset when the prize slips through his fingers, sometimes even intentionally giving it away to someone who needs it more. In The Castle of Cagliostro, his motivation shifts from a simple desire to steal to a more personal quest. After discovering a cache of near-perfect counterfeit money, he traces it to the Duchy of Cagliostro, a place he had attempted to infiltrate once before and barely escaped alive. His mission becomes twofold: to uncover the source of the counterfeits and to rescue Princess Clarisse, a young woman he recognizes as the girl who saved his life ten years prior.

Lupin is depicted as being extremely clever and able to devise audacious plans on the fly. Despite his genius, he can be accident-prone and expresses his frustration with a distinctive exclamation of "Ay-yi-yi" when things go wrong. He has a pronounced weakness for women in distress, a chivalrous trait that drives much of the plot. However, his view of Clarisse is notably respectful; he sees her not as a romantic conquest but as the same girl from his past, and his primary goal is to ensure her safety and freedom. In contrast, his infatuation with his long-time associate and rival, Fujiko Mine, is a consistent weakness that often leads him into trouble.

Lupin's role in the story is to act as the catalyst for unraveling the corrupt Count Cagliostro's schemes. He and his partner Daisuke Jigen, a master marksman, are the first to discover the counterfeit bills. He then assembles his usual network of allies for the infiltration of the seemingly impenetrable Castle of Cagliostro. This includes Goemon Ishikawa XIII, a master swordsman, and Fujiko Mine, a femme fatale with her own agenda. His relationship with his persistent pursuer, Inspector Koichi Zenigata of Interpol, is complex. While Zenigata has devoted his life to capturing Lupin, the two share a mutual respect that borders on friendship. In the film, Lupin deliberately tips off Zenigata to his location, using the inspector's presence as a distraction and eventually forming a temporary pact with him to escape the castle's dungeons.

Throughout The Castle of Cagliostro, Lupin demonstrates a remarkable degree of loyalty to his companions and even to Zenigata, willing to risk his own safety to aid them. His development in the film is subtle but significant, showing a more reflective and altruistic side than is often seen in other franchise entries, focusing on righting a wrong and protecting an innocent rather than simply acquiring wealth. Even after being seriously wounded, his stubborn determination and refusal to abandon Clarisse drive the story to its climax.

Lupin possesses a wide array of notable abilities. He is a master of disguise, a skilled sleight-of-hand artist, and a talented race car driver. He is also exceptionally resilient, able to take a significant physical beating and continue functioning. His physical prowess is complemented by his ability to escape from nearly any restraint; he can dislocate his thumbs to slip out of handcuffs with ease. He is resourceful and uses a variety of gimmicks and gadgets, from a belt with a grappling line to a lighter that may or may not work when he needs it most. Above all, his greatest asset is his unyielding determination and his ability to think faster and more cleverly than almost anyone else, allowing him to turn seemingly hopeless situations to his advantage.
