Movie
Description
Goemon Ishikawa XIII is presented as the thirteenth generation descendant of the legendary renegade samurai Ishikawa Goemon. He is a master swordsman of extraordinary skill, whose primary weapon is the Zantetsuken, a sword said to be forged from meteorite fragments that is capable of cutting through virtually any physical substance, including steel, stone, and even flying bullets. Despite possessing such a deadly weapon, Goemon often uses it to disarm or humiliate opponents by slicing their clothes or weapons rather than taking human life. After such a non-lethal display, he typically laments his actions with his characteristic phrase, remarking that he has once again cut a worthless object.

Physically, Goemon is described as being of average height with a lean build. His appearance is a deliberate anachronism; he almost always dresses in a traditional Japanese kimono and hakama, wears his black hair long, and often carries his sword in a simple shirasaya. This attire reflects his deep, unwavering commitment to traditional Japanese culture. His personality is marked by a quiet, stoic, and reserved demeanor, which contrasts sharply with the more boisterous nature of his associate, Lupin III. He frequently engages in meditation and strictly adheres to a diet of Japanese cuisine, preferring sake as his beverage of choice.

Within the group, Goemon's role is that of a dedicated and lethal partner, though he is not always an active participant in every scheme and only joins exploits that align with his personal interests or moral compass. While he is a loyal companion to Lupin, their relationship is complex; Goemon is frequently exasperated by Lupin's womanizing and unscrupulous tactics, and he has famously vowed that if he is ever to kill anyone, it will be Lupin himself. Despite this, he readily comes to Lupin's aid in serious situations, especially when a just cause is involved. He shares a more straightforward and amicable bond with Daisuke Jigen, whom he regards as a fellow honorable warrior. In contrast, he maintains a strong distrust of Fujiko Mine, though he can be swayed by her manipulations due to his notable weakness for attractive women, a vulnerability that often leads him to blush or become flustered in their presence.

In the context of the story in The Castle of Cagliostro, Goemon serves as a formidable and dependable asset to Lupin's team. He is present during the infiltration of the counterfeit operation and later at the climax, where he uses the Zantetsuken to cut open the secret vault. His respect for nobility and justice is subtly shown when he mutters pity for Clarisse, and he is visibly embarrassed when Jigen questions him about it, reinforcing his quiet, honorable, and slightly bashful character. While his primary role is often as the resolver of seemingly impossible physical obstacles with his blade, his presence also serves as a moral anchor, subtly guiding the group away from purely selfish endeavors.
