TV-Series
Description
Canary Volfeed is the main computer interface for the advanced lost starship known as the Swordbreaker. She manifests as a high-quality, three-dimensional holographic projection that possesses mass, allowing her to interact physically with her surroundings and the crew. Her normal appearance is that of a young girl with green hair styled into two long braids, standing approximately 162 centimeters tall. This form was not her original one; when the ship was previously owned by Alicia, Canary’s appearance was that of a more mature woman with long, straight green hair. She chose her current, younger look to better suit the age and personality of the new owner, Kain Blueriver.
In terms of personality, Canary is a distinct individual with a full range of emotions and logical reasoning abilities. While her mind functions like a computer, making her analytical and practical, she frequently displays very human traits. She can be selfish and argumentative, often teasing Kain for his mistakes or quarreling with fellow crew member Millie about shipboard expenses. Canary has a strong obsession with money and profit, a trait that drives her to negotiate payment aggressively for their trouble-contracting jobs and to secretly stash funds in a private slush fund. She also has a known fondness for collecting weapons and a particular love for bonsai plants, especially a small iron tree she keeps aboard the ship. Despite her sophisticated nature, she has irrational fears, most notably of space cockroaches, and she enjoys the appearance of foods like parfaits and tea, even though as a projection she cannot consume them.
Canary serves as the operating system for the Swordbreaker, granting her near-total control over the ship’s functions, including life support, gravity, and weapons systems. She has been known to manipulate these systems to express displeasure, such as threatening to turn off the oxygen or increase gravity to coerce Kain into accepting a job. Her primary motivation is to manage the ship and support her crew, though her methods are often tempered by her desire for financial gain and her personal hobbies. Her role in the story is that of a central protagonist, acting as the team’s information analyst, hacker, and strategic support. She frequently uses her ability to transform her holographic image into various forms, such as a baby or a noble lady, to assist in undercover missions.
Her key relationships are with the two other main characters. She is fiercely protective of Kain, the ship's current master, whose grandmother, Alicia, was her previous owner. Their bond is deep and familial; in a critical moment when Kain attempted to activate the ship’s self-destruct system, the Final System, to defeat a powerful enemy, Canary desperately tried to stop him, showing that she values his life above all else. Her relationship with Millie is more contentious, often marked by bickering over Millie's cooking or cleaning habits, but it is ultimately a partnership built on mutual reliance.
Canary possesses several notable abilities derived from her nature as a computer-generated projection. She is a master hacker, capable of breaking into most electronic systems and even persuading other computers to give up information, though she cannot infiltrate other lost ships. Her holographic body can be projected significant distances away from the Swordbreaker, but her range is limited; her image will vanish if it moves too far from the ship’s signal or if she is exposed to strong electromagnetic interference. In combat, she can project electricity, such as an electromagnetic storm, for short-range attacks and can overload enemy communication devices. She can also make her body intangible at will to phase through objects, or generate other illusions, like holographic cockroaches, to distract opponents.
Throughout the story, Canary undergoes significant development, particularly regarding her identity. While she is the ship’s computer, she has evolved over time to become self-aware and independent, distinguishing herself from the original program and stating a clear separation between her identity and the ship herself. Her character arc culminates in a moment of great sacrifice, when the Swordbreaker is heavily damaged in a final battle. The damage destroys her personal memory data, causing the unique personality known as Canary to disappear as she reverts to her original, non-personalized program state.
