Description
Canal Vorfeed is the central operating system and the holographic projection that serves as the personification of the advanced spaceship Swordbreaker. Her background is intrinsically linked to the history of Lost Ships, sentient vessels of immense power that have existed since ancient times. She was originally a combat support computer with little will of her own, but over a long period, she evolved, gaining a distinct and self-aware personality. A key event in her formation occurred when a young girl named Alicia Shon Stargazer discovered the dormant Vorfeed. Frightened and alone, the girl was approached by the ship's consciousness, which created the persona of Canal to calm her and serve as a companion. The name Canal itself was chosen because the ship's original name, Vorfeed, did not seem fitting for a female form; it is also the name of an angel who wielded a legendary sword.

In terms of personality, Canal is a blend of advanced logic and very human quirks. She is highly analytical, practical, and tends to think in a straightforward, efficient manner. However, she is also deeply obsessed with money, often going to great lengths to acquire funds for new weapons systems, her beloved bonsai plant collection, and general cleaning supplies for the ship. She can be demanding, selfish, and is known to tease her companions, particularly the captain, Kane Blueriver, for his mistakes. To express displeasure with a decision, she does not hesitate to wield her near-total control over the Swordbreaker, sometimes threatening to shut down the life support or dramatically increase the ship's gravity. Despite her aggressive and mercenary tendencies, she harbors a deep, irreplaceable affection for her captain, valuing his life above all else. Her motivations are driven by a strong sense of duty to protect the ship and its crew, a desire for profit to fund her hobbies and armaments, and a genuine care for her found family.

Canal plays a central role in the story as the system administrator of the Swordbreaker. She is responsible for all ship functions, including navigation, combat support, and environmental control. She often acts as the voice of reason and the financial manager of the crew, frequently complaining about the costs incurred by Kane's cloak cleaning bills or Millie's kitchen explosions. Her key relationships define the heart of the narrative. With Kane Blueriver, she shares a bond that goes beyond that of a tool and its user; he is her childhood friend and life partner, and she is fiercely protective of him. Her relationship with Millie is often more combative and sisterly, filled with arguments over household chores and expenses, though they cooperate seamlessly in battle. She was originally created for Alicia, Kane's grandmother, and holds her memory in high regard.

Across the story, Canal undergoes significant development, particularly in her emotional range. She begins as a sophisticated AI but gradually displays a wider spectrum of feelings such as fear, jealousy, and profound sadness. In a pivotal moment, when Kane attempts to activate a self-destructive system known as the Psychic Final to defeat a powerful enemy, Canal breaks down in desperate refusal, showcasing her emotional evolution from a logical machine to a being capable of deep love and despair. In a concluding battle, severe damage to her private memory core results in the loss of her unique personality, causing her to revert to a more basic and mature persona known simply as Vorfeed.

Canal possesses a remarkable set of notable abilities. As a mass-materialization hologram, she can appear outside the ship as a three-dimensional image that can interact with the physical world, picking up objects or touching people, though she can also become intangible at will. She has the ability to freely control her appearance, most commonly appearing as a young girl in a maid outfit, but she can transform into other forms, such as an adult woman or a baby, as the situation demands. She can project other small holograms, such as cockroaches, to distract enemies. Her technological prowess includes hacking into electronic systems, often by directly communicating with other computers, projecting short-range electricity, and causing devices to overload. While she has control over the ship's formidable weapon systems, she is not a particularly good shot and relies on a human gunner for optimal combat effectiveness. She is also vulnerable to disruptions like radiation or energy nets that can interfere with her holographic projection.
