Description
George de Sand is the Gundam Fighter representing Neo France in the thirteenth Gundam Fight. Born into the noble de Sand family, one of the few aristocratic houses that chose to remain on Earth after the colonies were established, he was raised with a strong sense of duty, chivalry, and national pride. From a young age, he was trained in the art of fencing by his family's loyal butler, Raymond Bishop, a man who has cared for him since infancy and who profoundly shaped his combat style.
George presents the image of a princely and elegant aristocrat, carrying himself with confidence and a refined demeanor. He is deeply proud of his nation and his own considerable skills as a pilot, which can sometimes manifest as an arrogant attitude towards fighters from other nations. He strongly adheres to the spirit of chivalry and believes in fighting with honor, showing proper respect toward women, particularly the Princess of Neo France, Maria Louise. His primary motivation in the Gundam Fight is to restore and bring honor to his homeland, viewing his role as a sacred duty to his king and country.
However, this polished surface conceals a deep psychological trauma known as the Marseilles Tragedy. During a domestic competition to determine Neo France's representative, his opponent, Jean-Pierre Mirabeau, used dirty tactics, hiding behind the crowd to prevent George from attacking. When Mirabeau was disqualified and subsequently tried to assassinate the king in a rage, George's attempt to stop him inadvertently caused one of Mirabeau's missiles to be redirected into the spectator stands, killing thousands of innocent people. This event is Georges only true fear and a source of immense guilt and emotional scarring that haunts him throughout the story.
George's role in the story begins as a rival to the protagonist, Domon Kasshu. He initially detests Domon for his brutish and unrefined methods, especially after Domon interferes in one of his official matches. This rivalry is the catalyst for their first significant battle, which ends in a draw when George prioritizes protecting Princess Maria Louise and the collapsing Eiffel Tower over winning the fight. Over time, his relationship with Domon evolves from simple contempt to a deep and mutual respect. He comes to see Domon as a worthy rival and a friend, a sentiment powerful enough that he later risks his own position and family honor by stealing the Gundam Rose to have an unofficial match with him when the king forbids it.
His other key relationships are equally defining. His bond with his butler Raymond Bishop is perhaps his most intimate; Raymond is not merely a servant but a friend, mentor, and the person George turns to in his moments of greatest need, even if his pride is sometimes wounded by Raymonds attempts to help him from behind the scenes. Princess Maria Louise is another significant figure in his life. While he is well aware of her infatuation with him, he remains neutral regarding any romantic feelings, instead acting as her loyal friend, protector, and a proper knight.
George's character undergoes considerable development, primarily through confronting his past. He later becomes a member of the Shuffle Alliance, inheriting the title of Jack of Diamonds from the previous bearer. However, his experience with the Devil Gundam reopens the old scars of the Marseilles Tragedy, causing his mental state to deteriorate and his fighting to become reckless and out of control. This inner turmoil forces him to fire Raymond and isolate himself. Georges ultimate test comes when he faces Mirabeau again, who has escaped prison and allied himself with the Devil Gundam. Paralyzed by fear, George is unable to fight until Raymond sacrifices himself to protect him, igniting a rage that grants him the strength to confront his nemesis. With the help of Domon and Raymonds encouragement, George conquers his fear, using his new power as the Jack of Diamonds to not only defeat Mirabeau but also purify him of the DG Cells infecting him. This event marks the closure of his tragic past and his full maturation as a warrior.
In combat, George is a master fencer, translating the elegance and precision of swordplay directly into the movements of his mobile suit, the GF13-009NF Gundam Rose. His notable abilities revolve around this theme, utilizing remote weaponry called Rose Bits (or Rose Screamers) that can attack from multiple angles and form defensive barriers. His other signature techniques include the Rose Hurricane, a powerful spinning attack, and the Rose Cutter. In his role as the Jack of Diamonds, he gains access to even greater power, including a Hyper Mode that allows him to perform his ultimate attack, the Rose Hurricane, demonstrating the full chivalric and destructive potential of his piloting skill.
