OVA
Description
Hikaru Hiyama is one of the three central characters in the love triangle that drives the story. She is a junior high school student who is two years younger than the protagonist Kyosuke Kasuga and her best friend Madoka Ayukawa. Her birthday is November 15, which interestingly is the same day as Kyosuke's. Physically, she is recognized by a tear-shaped mark, or beauty spot, beneath her right eye and her bobbed chestnut-colored hair.
When she is first introduced, Hikaru comes across as a surprisingly unpleasant brawler and a tougher talker than even the feared Madoka. However, this initial impression is a facade that quickly falls away after she befriends Kyosuke. Her true personality is revealed to be kind, sweet, and bursting with an energetic and extroverted nature that brightens any room she enters. Despite her tough exterior, she is notably child-like and somewhat sheltered, being an only daughter. When she becomes extremely excited or happy, she sometimes slips into a form of baby talk, a trait that is considered endearing.
Hikaru develops romantic feelings for Kyosuke after accidentally witnessing him sink an incredible long-distance basketball shot using his psychic powers. She is completely unaware of the supernatural element and is simply awestruck by what she believes to be an amazing athletic feat. From that moment on, she pursues him with an aggressive, innocent, and unwavering devotion. She famously never calls him by his name, instead using the English word Darling, a habit she began before she even learned who he was.
Her role in the story is that of the earnest and oblivious romantic rival to Madoka. While Kyosuke cares deeply for Hikaru, he views her more as a younger sister than a potential girlfriend. The central conflict of the narrative arises from Hikaru's complete ignorance of Kyosuke's true feelings for Madoka, a secret that Kyosuke and Madoka keep from her to protect her from being hurt. This makes her the primary obstacle to the resolution of the love triangle, though it is an obstacle born of genuine affection and loyalty.
The key relationships in Hikaru's life are with Madoka and Kyosuke. Her friendship with Madoka is the most significant. Before Hikaru, Madoka was a feared loner. Their bond was sealed when a bully stole young Hikaru's favorite medallion, and Madoka tracked the bully down and forced him to return it. Hikaru has been Madoka's best and almost only friend since then, as she and another classmate, Yusaku Hino, were the only ones who were never afraid of her. Hikaru deeply admires Madoka, looking up to her as an older sister. This deep friendship is what makes the love triangle so painful, as Hikaru is unaware that both the boy she loves and her beloved onee-sama have developed feelings for each other behind her back.
Over the course of the story, Hikaru remains a constant and energetic presence, but the narrative eventually forces her to confront the truth. When she finally discovers that Kyosuke's heart belongs to Madoka, the girl from his past who gave him a red straw hat, it is a devastating shock. This marks her most significant character development, as she must move from cheerful ignorance to a more mature understanding of love and loss. In the end, despite the immense heartache, she demonstrates great strength and grace, ultimately wishing for the happiness of both Kyosuke and Madoka, the two people she loves most. Her journey is a poignant depiction of first love and the pain of growing up.
Regarding notable abilities, Hikaru is not an academic standout and is portrayed as having poor singing skills, once even being described as tone-deaf. However, she possesses a talent for drawing, which she uses to create heartfelt gifts for those she cares about. Her primary strengths are her boundless energy, her fierce loyalty, and her ability to act as an emotional catalyst, forcing the more reserved Kyosuke and Madoka to eventually confront their true feelings.
