Description
Rei Kutani is a sandy-brown-haired first-year student at Korenkan High School, typically wearing her hair in a ponytail and sporting a noticeable fang. She plays defender on the girls' soccer team. Rei's personality blends arrogance with a deep-seated inferiority complex, especially towards naturally gifted players like Haruna Ito. This stems from her middle school experiences where she lacked innate talent and endured bullying from teammates for fundamental shortcomings, like juggling. Driven by this background, Rei cultivated a highly physical playstyle, using her body strength and long legs to engage in contact soccer—tripping opponents and pushing players—to compensate for technical limitations.

Playing alongside Haruna Ito and Mao Tsukuda in middle school fueled Rei's resentment towards Ito's effortless skill and Tsukuda's loyalty to Ito. Determined to prove her worth without natural talent, she embraced physicality as her soccer identity, a mindset solidified after her coach emphasized its importance. This approach led her to win first place in a futsal tournament by aggressively leveraging her physique. She continues as a key physical defender at Korenkan High.

Rei harbors complex relationships: she admires yet fiercely rivals Haruna Ito, viewing her as both inspiration and benchmark. She dislikes Mao Tsukuda for her perceived subservience to Ito. Following the futsal tournament, Rei holds a grudge against Nozomi Onda, who openly challenged the validity of Rei's physical approach, further fueling her determination to validate her methods. Rei's defining philosophy is captured in her assertion: "What's wrong with contact soccer? What's wrong with an inelegant, unrefined player like me doing what I do best?" This underscores her acceptance of her unrefined style as a legitimate strength.

Her development centers on reconciling resentment toward prodigies with her commitment to hard work, using physicality as her pathway to compete against and surpass more technically gifted opponents. She appears again in volume 8 as a member of Korenkan High School's team, continuing to refine her role as a physical defender.
