Description
Queen Badiane is the main antagonist of the 1995 anime film Sailor Moon SuperS: The Movie. She is a witch from another world who arrives on Earth with the goal of harvesting the dreams of children. Her plan centers on kidnapping children from around the world and bringing them to Marzipan Castle, where she seals them inside magical containers called Dream Coffins. The dreams of the sleeping children generate a form of magical energy, referred to as sugar energy, which she uses to feed a massive, growing phenomenon known as the Black Dream Hole. Her ultimate ambition is to enlarge the Black Dream Hole until it is powerful enough to swallow the entire Earth, placing the world and all its inhabitants under her control and trapping everyone in eternal sleep. She is sometimes called the Queen of Black Lightning or the dark Queen of Dreams, and her name is an adapted form of the French word for star anise, a spice that appears as a design motif attached to her skin and clothing throughout her appearance.
In personality, Badiane is manipulative, calculating, and ruthless. She presents her scheme to her fairy servants as a benevolent gift, promising that the children will be happy, safe, and able to remain children forever inside a dream world. In truth, she views the children purely as fuel for her power. She is dismissive of dissent, as when Perle, one of her fairies, declares that he no longer believes in her; she simply orders that Chibiusa be captured anyway. In the story, Badiane operates from Marzipan Castle and commands four fairies: Perle, Poupelin, Banane, and Orangeat. Poupelin uses a hypnotic flute to lure children into flying ships, while Banane and Orangeat help carry out the abductions. Perle initially serves her but becomes doubtful and ultimately turns against her, leading the Sailor Guardians to the castle after befriending Chibiusa. When Chibiusa is brought to the castle, Badiane senses the extraordinary power within her and singles her out as the key to finally opening the Black Dream Hole. The Sailor Guardians infiltrate the castle and confront her, and Badiane's power drain is so great that it forces all the Sailor Soldiers except Sailor Moon into a partial de-transformation. She then takes Chibiusa into the Black Dream Hole itself, where she traps Sailor Moon in a dream illusion. When Sailor Moon breaks free and refuses to surrender Chibiusa, Badiane assimilates herself into the Black Dream Hole and attacks with pure fire. With the combined power of the other Guardians channeled into them, Sailor Moon and Sailor Chibi Moon destroy her with the Moon Gorgeous Meditation attack, and the Black Dream Hole and Marzipan Castle are destroyed along with her.
