Description
Jun Fudo is the central protagonist of Devilman Lady, a character whose story exists in two primary versions with distinct differences between the original manga and the anime adaptation. In the manga, her background is that of a former Olympic-level swimmer and a highly skilled athlete who excelled at many physical activities and sports from a young age. She was also rather intelligent, getting good grades in school, and later became a high school teacher. In the anime, however, Jun is reimagined as a successful and beautiful 22-year-old supermodel in Tokyo, a profession that makes her a public figure but also contributes to a different set of personal struggles. Her childhood in this version is marked by a weak constitution and regular cases of anemia, which stands in stark contrast to her athletic manga counterpart. A constant across both versions is her first transformation into a devilman, which occurs during a traumatic attack by a monster known as a devil beast; following this event, she is recruited by the mysterious Lan Asuka to work for the Human Alliance, an organization dedicated to hunting these creatures.
Jun's personality is marked by the duality of her human and devilman selves, though the expression of this differs greatly between her adaptations. In the manga, she is initially introduced as a sophisticated and good-natured person who always looks out for others, though she had a competitive streak in her youth. After her first transformation into Devilman Lady, she begins to act more aggressive and instinctive, attacking enemies with little mercy, but thanks to special enzymes she received throughout her childhood, she is able to retain her sentience and sense of right and wrong, though she still struggles with violent and lustful impulses. In contrast, the anime portrays Jun as a very quiet, shy, sensitive, and introverted person with a deep brooding problem. Her beauty and success as a model belie an inner emptiness and a loss of taste for life, and she generally avoids most social interactions. As Devilman Lady, she becomes more vicious and ruthless, often violently ripping enemies to shreds, and she experiences a state of deep self-loathing and mental deterioration as she struggles to reconcile her human heart with the body of a devil beast.
Jun's motivations are primarily driven by a combination of external coercion and an internal desire to protect others. Initially, she is forced to work for the Human Alliance under an ultimatum from Lan Asuka: either hunt devil beasts with the organization or be hunted as a monster herself. Despite this lack of choice, a core part of her motivation is her inherent good nature. In the manga, this manifests as a desire to rehabilitate devil beasts when possible, a goal that often puts her at odds with the more aggressive Lan Asuka, who prefers to simply kill them. In the anime, her motivation is more closely tied to her personal relationships and her desire to protect those she cares about, such as her young model protégé, Kazumi Takiura. Her role in the story is that of a reluctant warrior and a hunter of devil beasts, forced to track down and destroy beings that were once human, all while grappling with her own monstrous nature and the manipulations of those around her.
Jun Fudo has several key relationships that define her journey and development. Her most significant and complex relationship is with Lan Asuka, her handler in the Human Alliance. While Asuka is controlling and often cold, a deep connection exists between them. In the manga, they are revealed to be two halves of the being Satan, and they eventually merge at the story's end. In the anime, Jun develops mixed feelings for Asuka, acknowledging she might have felt love for her but could not return her feelings due to her own self-loathing. Another crucial relationship is with Akira Fudo, the original Devilman. In the manga, Jun meets Akira after falling into Hell, where she quickly falls in love with him and remains devoted to him even after forgetting his name upon her return. In the anime, her most important bond is with Kazumi Takiura, a junior model for whom Jun acts as a big sister and mentor; Kazumi becomes a source of emotional support and love for Jun, and her death is a devastating blow. Jun also has a tragic relationship with Aoi Kurosaki, her childhood rival in swimming. Aoi was in love with Jun, and after Aoi becomes a devil beast, Jun is forced to kill her when she attempts to rape Jun and murder Asuka near the end of the manga.
Jun's development throughout the story is a descent into tragedy and a struggle for self-acceptance. In the anime, she begins as a timid model and transforms into a ferocious devilman, a change that accelerates her mental deterioration and leads to severe acts of self-loathing, causing her to distance herself from almost everyone. She eventually gains more independence and embraces her devilman nature, culminating in a final confrontation with Lan Asuka where she accepts who she has become. In the manga, her development is more about reconciling her aggressive devilman instincts with her fundamental goodness, a balance she learns to achieve with the help of Akira Fudo. The ultimate development for the manga version of Jun is the revelation that she is half of the archangel Satan, along with Lan Asuka, and the two of them merge to become that being once more at the story's conclusion.
As a devilman, Jun possesses a range of notable abilities that make her a formidable fighter. In her human form, she retains above-average physical capabilities; in the manga, she is an Olympic-level athlete, while in the anime, her transformation grants her a higher vitality and constitution than her sickly childhood would suggest. In her transformed state as Devilman Lady, she gains incredible superhuman agility, speed, and strength that allow her to leap great bounds. She possesses deadly claws that can rip through flesh and a long, spaded tail that she can use as a weapon to stab or pierce enemies. Her head features wings that allow her to slow her falls and perform a controlled free fall, and she can also sprout a massive pair of wings from her upper back on command, granting her true flight capabilities comparable to a fighter jet. In the anime, her abilities are more formally named and include the Devil Cutter, which shapes her wings and arms into blades, and the Devil Beam, which channels electricity into a high-voltage blast from her finger. Her most powerful form is Lady Giga, a gigantic version of herself that is ten meters in height, with proportionally increased combat abilities and the devastating Gigadein energy blast. In the manga, Jun also demonstrates the ability to grow to a gigantic size comparable to the demon lord Dante and, during her time in Hell, learns to shoot bullets of energy at her opponents.
