Description
Kiyoshi Maeda serves as Lan Asuka's personal secretary and also acts as the driver for Jun Fudo, a role that places him at the center of the conflict between humanity and Devil Beasts. While he is employed by the cold and pragmatic Asuka, Maeda’s loyalties are divided. He is a deeply moral individual who is increasingly disturbed by the way Jun is treated by the Human Alliance, viewing her not as a weapon but as a person suffering under a terrible burden. His primary motivation is a genuine concern for Jun’s well-being, both as a human and in her demonic form, showing immense displeasure at how she is regarded as nothing more than a hunting dog with no consideration for her feelings or health. This concern is a defining trait, as he is one of the few members of the organization who treats her with consistent kindness and respect.
In his professional capacity, Maeda is often seen delivering reports to Asuka and transporting Jun to various locations. He is not merely an observer, however, as he occasionally takes a more active role in the field. In moments when Jun struggles to control the Devilman Lady’s bloodlust and violent impulses, Maeda is sometimes able to step in and help calm her down, offering a rare anchor to her humanity. As a character, he acts as an important friend and ally to Jun, and his feelings for her eventually deepen into love, making him acutely aware of how other people, such as Tatsuya Yuasa, affect her.
While he is not a superhuman fighter, Maeda possesses notable abilities that stem from his intelligence and position. He has access to many classified documents and reports from the Human Alliance, and he uses this access to conduct his own investigations. His investigative skills are sharp; he is the first character to uncover the shocking truth about Asuka’s past and her real plans for the future. In desperate situations, he has demonstrated the ability to hold his own in a fight using only a combat knife, even against a Devil Beast, though he remains purely human and cannot overpower such creatures alone.
As the storyline progresses, Maeda’s suspicion of Asuka’s increasingly strange activities grows to a breaking point. Driven by his loyalty to Jun and his horror at the conspiracy he begins to unravel, he goes to investigate the matter thoroughly. He discovers documents detailing Asuka’s true, devastating intentions. Horrified, he resolves to warn Jun about the coming danger and the truth of Asuka’s nature. However, before he can relay this information, Asuka catches him. She kills him by shooting him in the head and stages the scene to look like the work of someone else, effectively silencing him and throwing off suspicion. His death is a pivotal moment in the narrative, deeply affecting Jun as she loses yet another person she cares about, reinforcing the story’s themes of tragedy and isolation.
