Description
Magali is the name used for the character Fujiko Mine in the French-language dub of the 1987 original video animation Lupin III: The Fuma Conspiracy. In this adaptation, she is sometimes referred to as Magali Mine. While the character is fundamentally the same person as the long-standing femme fatale of the Lupin III series, her portrayal in this specific film adheres closely to the traits established for her in the franchise.
Magali is a professional criminal, a skilled burglar, and a master of disguise and manipulation. She is extremely confident, resourceful, and independent, often driven by her own self-interest. Throughout the film, her primary motivation is the acquisition of wealth and treasure. While she is capable of affection and cooperation, her loyalty is ultimately to herself, and she is frequently depicted as being duplicitous, greedy, and reckless. She regularly uses her charm and sexuality to get what she wants, though in this installment, her more seductive qualities are not as prominently featured as in other stories.
Her role in the story is as a key member of the group assisting Lupin, though her actions are often taken for personal gain. Magali is among the principal characters attending the wedding of their ally Goemon, which is the starting point of the plot. During the ceremony, she and Lupin successfully recover a sacred vase that is the target of the antagonistic Fuma Clan, though the clan manages to kidnap the bride, Murasaki. Later in the narrative, Magali takes the initiative by tracking down the secret headquarters of the Fuma Clan on her own. This endeavor backfires when she is discovered and captured by the clan. While imprisoned, she is taunted by the traitorous Inspector Kazami, who places the now-worthless vase over her head. After her captors leave, Magali manages to escape. In the process, she accidentally breaks the vase and discovers a hidden golden key among the shards, a crucial item for unlocking the path to the treasure. She keeps this discovery to herself for a time, demonstrating her typical secretive and self-serving nature. During the final confrontation in the treasure-filled castle, she is one of the fighters who battles the Fuma ninjas. In the film's closing moments, having survived the booby-trapped caverns and the ensuing collapse, Magali is seen riding away on her motorcycle, having secured a single gold roof tile from the treasure as her personal reward.
Regarding her relationships, Magali interacts with the established Lupin gang. She shares a long history with Lupin, whom she often outmaneuvers but also partners with when their goals align. Her relationship with Jigen and Goemon is characterized by a mutual distrust, as they are fully aware of her willingness to double-cross anyone to claim a prize for herself. In The Fuma Conspiracy, the character development for Magali is limited, as she remains true to her classic archetype from start to finish. Her most significant moment of development is not a change in character, but rather an affirmation of her cleverness and independent nature when she discovers the golden key and, ultimately, when she ensures she does not leave the adventure empty-handed.
Magali's notable abilities include her skills as a thief, adept at infiltration, lock-picking, and stealing. She is also a capable motorcyclist, as seen when she rides off at the end of the film. Her cunning and ability to escape from seemingly impossible situations are also demonstrated when she frees herself from captivity at the Fuma Clan headquarters.
