Description
Rui Nikaido is the 18-year-old lead singer and center of the idol group Mystery Kiss. A highly competitive nature and intense drive for success, rooted in childhood tendencies to overachieve, define her background and place her at the core of the group's activities and conflicts.

Her relationship with 34-year-old comedian Atsuya Baba evolves significantly. Initially viewing his laid-back approach as defeatist against her relentless pursuit of fame, exposure to life's unpredictability reshapes her perspective. She gradually understands Baba's acceptance of a simpler existence, recognizing consistent effort doesn't guarantee surpassing others. This maturity fosters genuine affection as she values his consistent kindness and treatment of her as an individual beyond her idol status, leading to a secret romantic involvement with a 16-year age gap.

Within Mystery Kiss, her actions are central to covering up the death of group member Yuki Mitsuya. To protect the group's scheduled debut, Rui participates in the cover-up alongside manager Yamamoto and fellow member Shiho Ichimura. This decision entangles them with yakuza figures like Yano, incurring substantial debts and forcing ongoing cooperation with criminal schemes. The cover-up involves recruiting Sakura Wadagaki as Yuki's replacement and implementing mask-wearing during performances to conceal the substitution. These measures create prolonged psychological strain for Rui, Yamamoto, and Shiho, compounded by financial losses and moral compromises. Police discovery of Yuki's corpse ultimately renders their efforts futile, leading to Mystery Kiss's indefinite suspension.

A foundational plot twist reveals that Rui, like all characters, is human; her toy poodle appearance exists solely within protagonist Odokawa's perception due to his visual agnosia, represented by the animal designs.

Her narrative intersects with the "Missing High School Girl" case, which propels much of the series' mystery. While not directly causing the disappearance, her involvement in Yuki Mitsuya's death and its concealment indirectly fuels the police investigations and underworld tensions converging around Odokawa.
