Description
Elle du Rosenbach, also known simply as Elle, is a character from the 1983 feature film Urusei Yatsura: Only You. She serves as the primary antagonist of the story and is the ruler of Planet Elle, holding the title of the 888th queen of her kingdom. At the age of seventeen, Elle has distinctive red or pink short hair and is widely recognized as one of the most beautiful women in the galaxy.

The foundation of Elle's background and her central role in the plot lies in an event from her childhood. When she was six years old, she visited Earth and was taken to a kindergarten by her relative, Babara. There, she met a young Ataru Moroboshi, and the two played a game of shadow tag. On her home planet, stepping on another person's shadow is considered a marriage proposal. After young Ataru stepped on her shadow, Elle made a promise to return in eleven years to become his wife. While this encounter became the defining event of her life, Ataru completely forgot about it, leading to a confrontation years later when she arrived to claim him.

Elle's most defining personality trait is her obsessive and possessive view of love. She is not merely a romantic seeker but a collector. Her hobby, which she pursues without moral qualm, is to amass a collection of handsome men who have professed their love for her. Once a man declares his affection, she freezes him and places him in cryogenic stasis inside a giant refrigerator to preserve his love and beauty forever. Despite having nearly one hundred thousand frozen fiancés, Elle distinguishes her pursuit of Ataru from these trophies. She expresses a desire for him to be her actual husband, claiming that he is special because he would be choosing her of his own free will. This highlights a deep contradiction in her character: she seeks a genuine partner in Ataru while simultaneously treating countless other suitors as inanimate collectibles.

In the story of Only You, Elle is the catalyst for the entire conflict. Arriving on Earth with her entourage and her rose-shaped spaceship, she declares her intention to marry Ataru. This directly challenges Lum, who considers herself Ataru's wife. Elle's motivation is twofold: to fulfill the childhood promise she has cherished for over a decade and to add the one man who ever beat her at a game to her collection. Throughout the film, she remains calm, regal, and in control, orchestrating events from her palace on Planet Elle. Her role as an antagonist is not defined by overt malice but by the cold, systematic way she imposes her will on others and her complete disregard for the autonomy of her would-be husbands.

In terms of relationships, Elle's most significant and central connection is with Ataru Moroboshi. She is entirely fixated on him, viewing their childhood game as an unbreakable bond. Her relationship with Lum is one of direct rivalry, as Lum fiercely opposes the marriage and fights to reclaim Ataru. She also has a key relationship with her attendant, Babara, the elderly woman who cared for her as a child and accompanies her on the mission to Earth. Her interactions with other male characters, such as the wealthy Shutaro Mendo, further illuminate her nature; when Mendo attempts to seduce her, Elle coolly attempts to add him to her frozen collection, demonstrating that her interest is exclusive to Ataru and all other men are merely potential exhibits.

Elle undergoes a significant development by the film's conclusion. Her plan ultimately unravels when the truth about the childhood event is revealed. A time-travel sequence shows that Ataru had actually lied about winning the shadow tag game, meaning their marriage promise was based on falsehood. This technicality, combined with the group's discovery and liberation of the ninety-nine thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine men frozen in her collection, dismantles her claim to Ataru. Faced with the collapse of her carefully structured world of collected love, Elle is forced to confront the consequences of her actions, and her pursuit of Ataru comes to an end. She does not possess supernatural combat abilities or special powers like many other characters in the Urusei Yatsura universe. Her notable abilities are instead her political authority as queen, the technological resources of her planet, and her extraordinary beauty, which she wields as an effective tool to attract suitors.
