OVA
Description
Maiko Omaezaki is a girl who appears as a spirit in the Urusei Yatsura OVA episode Date with a Spirit. She is a young teenager, approximately fourteen or fifteen years old, with light blue hair, blue eyes, and a headband of yellow. Her outfit consists of a marine-themed shirt and white short pants. She was a high school freshman at the time of her death.
Her central motivation in the story is her strong romantic attachment to the young exorcist Tsubame Ozuno. Maiko believes that Tsubame rescued her from a terrible male ghost called a jibakurei, and in gratitude, she declares her love for him. This infatuation drives her actions, as she refuses to leave his side, going so far as to teleport directly to him whenever he attempts to get away. Her presence causes significant confusion and jealousy for Tsubame's fiancée, Sakura.
Maiko's role in the narrative is that of an unconventional spirit. When Sakura attempts a standard exorcism using an ofuda charm, the ritual has no effect on Maiko, leaving the experienced Sakura shocked and the girl herself merely confused. This inability to be exorcised by normal means highlights her unique nature as a spirit. Her arrival at Tsubame’s home on the morning of his date with Sakura is the inciting incident for the episode's conflict.
Regarding her key relationships, beyond her one-sided devotion to Tsubame, the story reveals that Maiko is not entirely forthcoming about her past. She initially claims to have never loved anyone, but it is later disclosed that she was once in a relationship with another spirit named Mamoru Maizuru. She had broken up with him after seeing him look at another woman. It is eventually clarified that Mamoru was only looking at the woman's small dog, leading to a reconciliation between them. Maiko then returns with Mamoru to the spirit world.
In terms of development, Maiko undergoes a shift from an obsessive figure clinging to the living world to a reconciled spirit who chooses to depart with her former boyfriend. Her notable abilities include an immunity to standard spiritual exorcism techniques and the power to instantly appear beside Tsubame whenever she is separated from him, a manifestation of her powerful attachment.
