Description
Nanà is the central protagonist of the anime Nanako SOS, a young girl of unknown origin who unexpectedly gains superhuman abilities while simultaneously losing all memories of her past. This occurs as the unintended consequence of a scientific experiment conducted by a high school student named Tomoshige Yotsuya, who styles himself a genius scientist. After her sudden appearance, Yotsuya offers to help Nanà recover her lost memories on the condition that she join his detective agency, which he operates under the name of a general-purpose company. Nanà agrees innocently, unaware that Yotsuya's true intention is to exploit her powers for his own financial and ambitious gain.

In terms of personality, Nanà is gentle, timid, and highly emotional. She is prone to crying and is easily flustered, often displaying a lack of confidence in her own abilities despite her extraordinary powers. She is naive and trusting, which makes her vulnerable to manipulation by those around her, particularly Yotsuya. She is naturally kind-hearted, peace-loving, and avoids conflict whenever possible. She can also be clumsy and indecisive, frequently becoming overwhelmed when put in stressful situations. However, beneath her fragile exterior, she possesses a core of sincerity and a genuine desire to help others, even if she lacks the assertiveness to do so on her own initiative.

Nanà's primary motivation is to regain her lost memories and understand her own origins. She also wishes to be useful and accepted by those around her, which is why she goes along with Yotsuya's schemes despite often being confused or uncomfortable. Her desire to belong and her trusting nature drive her to participate in the various missions and odd jobs that Yotsuya assigns to her.

Within the story, Nanà serves as the superpowered heart of the narrative. She is the member of the trio that actually possesses the ability to resolve the bizarre situations they encounter. Her role is often to be the one who ultimately saves the day, even though she rarely takes the lead or makes decisions independently. She is the focal point around which the comedic and chaotic adventures revolve, and her presence draws in a wide array of eccentric villains, aliens, and supernatural beings.

Key relationships shape Nanà's journey. Her bond with Yotsuya is complex: he is her manipulator and employer, yet she develops a romantic crush on him and often seeks his approval, while he in turn begins to show some grudging care for her as time passes. The other crucial figure is Iidabashi Hiroshi, Yotsuya's classmate and friend, who is more compassionate and protective toward Nanà. He frequently worries about her well-being and criticizes Yotsuya for taking advantage of her. Nanà looks to Iidabashi as a source of warmth and moral support, and she often finds herself torn between following Yotsuya's orders and listening to Iidabashi's concerns.

Throughout the series, Nanà experiences some degree of character development as she encounters a wide variety of dangerous missions and mysterious events. She grows more accustomed to using her powers in unpredictable situations, though her basic personality remains gentle and impressionable. She undergoes unusual transformations at certain points, such as temporarily turning into a boy named Nanano, and at one stage her powers completely disappear, forcing her to cope without them. These experiences, while often played for comedy, slowly add depth to her character.

Nanà possesses a broad range of superhuman abilities. She can fly, has immense physical strength, and is capable of teleportation and telekinesis. She also demonstrates the power of transformation or disguise, as well as extrasensory perception such as clairvoyance. On occasion, she is able to grow to a giant size. Her powers are considerable, but her lack of confidence and emotional fragility often prevent her from using them to their full potential unless she is strongly guided or motivated by others.
