Description
Grant Goddard, known in his transformed state as Teknoman Axe, serves as a significant antagonist in the narrative. Before his transformation, Goddard held two crucial roles. He was the martial arts instructor to both Takaya Aiba and Shinya Aiba, the brothers who become Blade and Evil. Additionally, he was an electrical engineer, though his physical prowess and combat skills were always considered more defining than his technical expertise.
Personality wise, Goddard is characterized by a deep sense of loyalty and a conflicted sense of duty. While he is a devoted soldier of the Radam, his past on Earth creates a complex interior world. He regrets the tragic fate that forces his two former students to fight each other. This regret is so profound that he attempts to persuade Takaya Aiba to return to the Radam, viewing it as a way to end their suffering rather than an act of malice. His primary motivation is his absolute loyalty to Shinya, who becomes Teknoman Evil. This allegiance is not born purely from Radam programming but from a personal promise made years ago. Before the spaceship Argos departed, Takaya asked Goddard to protect Shinya if anything went wrong. As their mentor who had grown close to both brothers, Goddard readily accepted this request, and it defines his actions as a warrior.
In the story, Teknoman Axe commands the Radam forces on Earth during a period when Teknoman Evil is temporarily incapacitated. He performs his duties reliably and becomes a direct and powerful obstacle for the protagonist, Blade. His significance in the plot peaks during a critical battle in England, where the resistance seeks to acquire his crystal. Despite being perceived as potentially weaker than Evil, Axe proves to be an immensely formidable Teknoman, providing Blade with one of his most challenging one-on-one fights.
The key relationship in Goddard's life is with Shinya and Takaya. As their teacher, he witnessed their bond and was aware of the complex exchange of emotions between them. His death has a tangible impact on Shinya, who instinctively senses the moment of his demise.
Regarding his development, Goddard remains a loyal antagonist until the very end. Unlike some other transformed Tekkamen, he does not regain his human senses or reject his Radam programming. He persists in his mission to defeat Blade and secure the crystal, dying as a soldier of the enemy. In his final moments, mortally wounded by Blade, he still attempts a last-ditch bear hug to trigger his self-destruction, ultimately perishing when he is shot in the head by Bernard O'Toole, which allows Blade to escape the ensuing explosion.
His notable abilities are tied to his heavy armor and raw power. He wields a double-bladed axe known as the Tek Lancer, which can be used for powerful spin attacks or thrown to create massive explosions. He can also fire energy projectiles from this weapon. His signature and most devastating technique is the Voltekka, an extremely powerful blast of antimatter particles fired from his chest. He possesses regenerative armor that allows him to recover from damage when not in battle and can fly at incredible speeds, even in space.
