Description
Balzac Asimov, also known as Balzac St. Jacques in some adaptations, is a complex character whose journey from antagonist to ally forms a significant arc in the story. He holds the rank of major within the Earth Allied Forces and is initially introduced as a spy. Disguised as a war correspondent, he infiltrates the Space Knights, the primary team fighting the alien Radam threat. His mission is to steal the critical data on the Tekkaman system used by the protagonist, D-Boy. This objective is achieved, though it is implied the Space Knights' leader, Freeman, allowed the leak to occur deliberately.
Balzac's background is rooted in poverty. He grew up in the slums, where he resorted to theft to survive alongside his friend, Marlo. A betrayal by an associate led to his imprisonment. His escape from this life came through military service, an opportunity that fueled a powerful ambition to rise above his lowly origins and achieve success and status at any cost. This hunger for power and recognition is the driving force behind his early actions. As the pilot of the first prototype Sol Tekkaman unit, a human-made imitation of the alien armor, he is arrogant and dismissive of D-Boy, viewing him as an obstacle to his own glory.
His role in the story shifts dramatically following a major defeat. During a military operation to reclaim the orbital ring, his Sol Tekkaman unit is no match for Tekkaman Evil, one of the primary antagonists. He is brutally defeated and left for dead. Wandering in the desert, he is rescued and nursed back to health by a woman named Riruru and her younger sibling. This period of recovery forces him to confront his own insignificance and the hollowness of his previous ambitions. Living a simple, peaceful life as a farmer with Riruru, he finds genuine happiness and begins to fall in love with her.
This experience fundamentally changes his personality and motivations. When he eventually reunites with the Space Knights, he is a humbled and different man. He reconciles with his former rivals, including D-Boy and Noal, and joins their cause not for personal fame, but to fight the Radam and avenge the death of his friend Marlo, who was killed in the earlier conflict. His development is complete as he becomes a selfless and valued member of the team, providing crucial support and forming a deep, unspoken bond with D-Boy, whose own deteriorating health he observes with genuine concern.
In terms of abilities, Balzac is a skilled soldier and pilot. His primary asset is the Sol Tekkaman suit, which grants him enhanced strength, durability, and combat capabilities similar to a natural Tekkaman, though generally inferior. He demonstrates remarkable tenacity and survival instinct, as shown by his escape after being critically injured by Tekkaman Evil. His most notable ability emerges near the end of the story, where he uses a specialized weapon developed by Freeman, designed to forcibly cancel a Tekkaman's transformation. In his final battle against Tekkaman Sword, he successfully uses this device, sacrificing himself to ensure his enemy's destruction as they both fall through the Earth's atmosphere. His sacrifice is so significant that his name is later honored by the Earth Allied Forces with a medal named after him.
