Description
Chief Heinrich Von Freeman, also known as Heinrich von Freeman, serves as the founder and commanding officer of the Space Knights, a special defense force that represents humanity's primary resistance against the alien Radam. Formerly the head of the Outer Space Development Organization, he reformed the group into a military unit following the Radam invasion. Standing at nearly two meters tall with white hair, he is often seen wearing a pair of distinctive, uniquely shaped sunglasses.
On the surface, Freeman presents an image of absolute calm and composure. His strategic mind is exceptionally sharp, allowing him to make calculated decisions that sometimes appear cold or ruthless to those around him. However, this demeanor masks a deeply emotional and caring individual who consistently acts in the best interests of his comrades. He is a trustworthy leader who feels genuine sorrow over the deteriorating health of the protagonist, D-Boy, and shows consideration for the feelings of others, such as allowing D-Boy to stay by the side of the dying Miyuki.
Freeman's role in the story is that of the master strategist and moral center of the Space Knights. He is the one who authorizes missions from the base and provides crucial support to Tekkaman Blade. Unlike militaristic leaders who view D-Boy solely as a weapon, Freeman asserts that no one has the right to force the young man to fight, demonstrating a strong ethical code that prioritizes individual humanity over tactical gain. His key relationships include those with the core team members, such as pilot Noal Vereuse and navigator Aki Kisaragi, whom he commands directly. He also maintains complex interactions with external forces, such as General Colbert of the United Defense Forces, who represents a contrasting perspective that seeks to exploit Tekkaman technology for personal advancement.
As the series progresses toward the final battle against the Radam's lunar base, Freeman's leadership becomes even more critical, effectively making him the supreme commander of Earth's remaining fighting forces. His character development is subtle but significant; while he remains the reliable pillar of the group, his deep care for his subordinates becomes more apparent as the physical and mental toll on D-Boy worsens. In the aftermath of the final conflict, he adopts a merciful perspective on D-Boy's amnesiac state, suggesting that while forgetting is a sin, if it is the only peace left for the hero, even God would forgive it.
Beyond his strategic and command abilities, Freeman possesses a wide range of notable technical and combat skills. He is a brilliant scientist and engineer who personally develops anti-Radam weaponry and the Pegasus support unit, analyzes the Tekkaman transformation system, and even pioneers the development of the advanced Blaster upgrade for Tekkaman Blade. His political acumen is equally refined; he maintains his own intelligence network within the military and once deliberately leaked technical data about the Tekkaman to a spy, knowing it would lead to the creation of mass-produced Sol Tekkaman soldiers by the Earth military, a move that ultimately strengthened humanity's overall forces. He is also proficient in hacking, having manipulated military computers to facilitate D-Boy's escape, and is an expert marksman who once recorded an A-grade score during training. An unusual personal hobby of his includes viewing the corpses of Radam beasts stored as samples late at night.
