Description
Kenichi Mifune, also known as the Masked Racer or Racer X, is a central supporting character in the original Speed Racer anime. His background is rooted in family conflict and a drive for redemption. He is the eldest son of Mom and Pops Racer and the older brother of Speed and Spritle. Before the events of the series, Kenichi, then known as Rex Racer, aspired to be a professional driver. He secretly took his father’s first custom-built car, the Mach One, to enter his first race. The car was wrecked in a crash near the finish line. This led to a heated argument with Pops, who feared for his son’s safety and did not want him to race again. Angry and misunderstood, Kenichi left home and disappeared for years.
During his absence, he was trained by a prince named Kabala and eventually became a highly skilled driver and a covert agent for Interpol. He adopted the masked persona of Racer X to operate in secret. His personality is marked by a blend of heroic selflessness, mystery, flamboyance, and a brooding sense of duty. He is deeply sympathetic and often carries a quiet sorrow over his estranged family. His primary motivation is to protect his younger brother Speed from the dangers of the racing world and the criminals who target him, all while keeping his identity hidden to avoid compromising his spy work.
In the story, Racer X appears at critical moments during races, often sacrificing his own chance at victory to save Speed from sabotage or deadly traps. This repeated pattern allows Speed to win, while Racer X finishes second and then vanishes. His role is that of a guardian and a shadowy rival. Key relationships include his complex bond with Speed, whom he loves but cannot openly acknowledge, and his strained connection with Pops, who eventually learns the truth and reconciles with him in his own way. He also interacts with other villains and agents through his Interpol missions.
Over the course of the series, Kenichi undergoes development from a reclusive, guilt-ridden exile to a figure who begins to reengage with his family. Speed grows suspicious of Racer X’s true identity during the Challenge of the Masked Racer episodes and finally confirms it near the series end in The Trick Race. The revelation brings a degree of closure, and Kenichi ultimately chooses to leave professional racing behind to become a full-time international secret agent, signaling a new chapter in his life.
Notable abilities include extraordinary driving skill, widely considered superior even to Speed’s. He is recognized by his father and brother as the greatest driver they have ever seen. His reflexes, tactical mind, and mastery of his vehicle, the yellow number 9 Shooting Star, allow him to perform complex maneuvers and outpace most opponents. Additionally, he is an accomplished spy and hand-to-hand combatant, trained in infiltration and surveillance. His masked identity and secret career define his unique place in the series as both an ally and an enigma.
