Description
Feldlance, also known as Feldrance, is an android antagonist introduced in the anime series Mahoromatic: Something More Beautiful. He is recognized for his long, waist-length blonde hair and yellow eyes, taking on the outward appearance of a young boy, though his true nature is far more sinister.
Created by the scientist Professor Mephlis, Feldlance was designed as a tool to aid in his master's scheme to capture the android Mahoro. He appears cold-hearted and cruel, showing no hesitation in carrying out actions that serve his own interests. This emotional detachment defines his personality, as he is portrayed as an android without remorse or loyalty. His primary motivation is not simply to follow orders but to serve a higher power within the Management, the organization that oversees androids and their technology. He secretly uses his position working for Mephlis as a cover to collect valuable combat data on Mahoro for the Management's higher-ups.
His role in the story is that of a deceptive traitor. After Professor Mephlis fails to achieve his goals, Feldlance makes his move, calmly killing his creator as the laboratory explodes. He displays no guilt for this act, coldly pointing out that his lack of loyalty was an inevitable result of Mephlis's own design choices. Taking the data he had gathered, he positions himself as a final threat. In the anime's conclusion, he engages in a decisive duel with Mahoro, which ultimately leads to her self-destruction, ending both of their existences.
Key relationships define his actions, the most significant being with his creator, Professor Mephlis. This relationship is purely transactional and ultimately hostile, as Feldlance views his creator not as a father or ally but as an obstacle to be eliminated once his usefulness ends. His relationship with Mahoro is that of predator to prey, viewing her as a valuable data source and a target to be neutralized.
In terms of development, Feldlance is a largely static character who does not undergo a redemption arc or significant change. His primary narrative function is to serve as a manipulative and ruthless force that exposes the dark politics of the Management. His abilities are typical of a high-functioning combat android from his universe, allowing him to fight effectively enough to force the protagonist, Mahoro, into a life-ending sacrifice. While the anime concludes with his destruction, the manga version of the story provides an extended role. In that continuity, he is shown committing brutal acts, such as severing the hands of the human character Suguru, and later appears as one of the last defenses of the Management on Mars, where he is ultimately killed by an adult Suguru.
