Description
Colonel Kurtz, also referred to in some sources as Krutes, is a commanding officer within the Regular Army on the planet Jerra. His backstory is tied directly to the planet's devastating civil war against the Nexrum rebellion. During this conflict, he was aware of the Most Dangerous Soldiers project, a program designed to create genetically enhanced super soldiers named MDS. Colonel Kurtz held a command position at the time the MDS units, including the soldier known as Geist, were developed. He came to the conclusion that these soldiers were too unstable and dangerous to be of any use, believing them to be a threat to both the enemy and their own allies. Because of this, he advocated for the termination of the MDS project and specifically wanted to have Geist executed. However, his wish was not granted, and Geist was instead imprisoned in a stasis satellite and launched into orbit around Jerra.
Colonel Kurtz is a pragmatic and cautious military leader. Unlike some of his troops, who are enticed by the raw power of an MDS, Kurtz maintains a clear understanding of the immense danger posed by these genetically engineered killers. He is aware that Geist is not a controllable asset but a homicidal force of nature. This makes him one of the few characters who correctly assesses the true scale of the threat Geist represents. His personality is defined by his duty to complete his mission and protect what remains of his forces, leading him to be decisive and ruthless when necessary. As the story progresses, and as his plans to neutralize Geist fail, Kurtz experiences a moment of mental breakdown, laughing uncontrollably as he realizes the inevitable outcome of his failure.
The primary motivation for Colonel Kurtz throughout the narrative is to prevent the activation of the Death Force, a doomsday device designed to exterminate all life on the planet. This mission becomes his singular focus. He leads a team, including the bandit group now following Geist, on a desperate raid to infiltrate the heavily guarded Brain Palace fortress. His goal is to reach the control center and deactivate the doomsday program before it can be triggered, believing that stopping this weapon is paramount. Beyond this immediate objective, he is also motivated by a long-standing desire to eliminate MD Geist, whom he correctly views as a great evil that needs to be destroyed to ensure any chance of survival for the planet's population.
In the story, Colonel Kurtz serves as the leader of the Jerran Regular Army forces and the commander of a massive mobile tank-like fortress. He acts as a foil to the protagonist Geist, representing the last vestige of military order and rationality in a world descending into chaos. His role is that of the seasoned commander who understands the past mistakes that led to the current crisis. During the assault on the Brain Palace, Kurtz is the strategic mind guiding the operation. He is a key figure in the climax of the film, as he successfully manages to reach the control room and stop the Death Force countdown. Having completed his primary mission, he then turns his attention to dealing with Geist, whom he sees as a remaining evil that must be eliminated from the world.
The most significant relationship for Colonel Kurtz is with MD Geist. They share a past where Kurtz was likely Geist's commanding officer during the war. This history informs Kurtz's deep distrust and fear of Geist, as he was witness to the atrocities the MDS soldiers committed. Throughout the events of the anime, Kurtz tries to work alongside Geist out of necessity to stop the Death Force, but he simultaneously plots to destroy him. He makes an uneasy alliance with Geist but is constantly wary of his presence. Kurtz also has a relationship with his own troops, whom he warns about the danger of Geist. He expresses grief and acknowledges their sacrifices when they are killed during the mission to Brain Palace. His final attempt to defeat Geist involves activating a powerful combat robot named Final Striker, which leads to his death. After the robot fails, Kurtz loses his composure, laughing in desperation before being killed by Geist, who crushes his head. Despite his death, Kurtz succeeds in his mission to deactivate the Death Force, though Geist ultimately reactivates the device.
In terms of development, Colonel Kurtz remains a consistent character. He does not undergo a significant moral transformation, as his core belief that Geist is a monstrous threat never wavers. His development is more circumstantial, moving from a position of authority and cautious planning to one of desperate survival. His mental state deteriorates in his final moments as his contingency plans fail, transforming from the composed commander into a broken man facing his own doom at the hands of the very weapon he tried to destroy years ago. He appears to be a regular human being, and his notable abilities lie not in superhuman strength or genetic augmentation, but in his military leadership, strategic planning, and his comprehensive knowledge of the MDS project and the Death Force doomsday device. He is a capable soldier, able to survive the deadly raid on the Brain Palace when most of his team is killed, but his primary weapon is his tactical mind rather than any physical prowess.
