Description
Vaiya, also known as Iyena, is a prominent supporting character in the post-apocalyptic anime. She initially appears as the leader of a small, roving band of outlaws or pirates on the war-ravaged planet Jerra. Her life changes forever when her group comes across the stasis pod of the central character Geist, a genetically engineered super-soldier, after he crash-lands on the planet. She is immediately drawn to his immense strength and violent power, and after Geist kills her group's previous leader, she names him the new leader of their mercenary company.
Personality-wise, Vaiya is a capable and hardened survivor of a brutal world. She is attracted to power and sees in Geist a force of nature unlike any other. This attraction is both practical, as she believes he can lead them to dominance, and personal, as she develops a romantic obsession with him. Her motivations revolve around survival and a desire for a place of security and power in the chaotic wasteland. She tries to forge a relationship with Geist, even throwing herself at him in an attempt at seduction, but she is met with complete indifference. Geist, who exists only for combat, has no interest in romance or human connection and swats her away. This rejection sets the tone for her arc, which is defined by her failing attempts to understand and control a being of pure destruction.
Vaiya's role in the story is that of a key witness and a victim of Geist's all-consuming nature. She follows him into service with the Jerran Regular Army, where they are tasked with deactivating a doomsday weapon known as the Death Force. However, when they reach the central control room, Geist betrays everyone and activates the weapon instead, condemning the planet to genocide so that he will have a new, endless army of machines to fight. Vaiya is present for this horrific act of nihilism and is last seen screaming as Geist leaves her to the activation sequence, strongly implying he killed her.
Despite this, Vaiya miraculously survives the initial activation of the Death Force and reappears in the sequel, M.D. Geist II: Death Force. By this time, the Death Force machines have decimated most of Jerra's population. Vaiya is found as a traumatized scavenger, barely surviving among a small group of refugees. Her experiences with Geist have shattered her psyche. When Geist later arrives at the sanctuary of a warlord named Krauser, she has a complete mental breakdown, hysterically screaming that Geist is an "angel of death" and a demon who will never stop killing them. Her fear and trauma are so overwhelming that Krauser is forced to confine her to a cell for her own safety and the safety of others. Her key relationships, therefore, are defined by Geist, who transforms from an object of her desire into the source of her deepest terror. She also serves as a tool to recognize Krauser as another "Most Dangerous Soldier" like Geist, due to a gold necklace he wears, showing her learned paranoia and awareness of these super-soldiers.
In terms of development, Vaiya transforms from a confident, aggressive leader of a bandit gang into a shattered and terrified survivor. Her initial strength is replaced by a state of near-catatonic fear, and her final scenes show her desperately trying to escape her locked cell as the world burns around her. She is one of the few characters to ultimately survive the events of both films, last seen among a handful of refugees watching Krauser's fortress be destroyed, leaving her fate ambiguous but her trauma fully realized. While she has no superhuman abilities, she is a capable fighter and leader in a wasteland, able to survive for extended periods in a world overrun by killing machines. Her primary notable ability is her sheer tenacity for survival, having lived through both the activation of the Death Force and the events of the sequel against all odds.
