OVA
Description
Geist, the central figure of the M.D. Geist series, is designated MD-02, the second in a line of bio-engineered super-soldiers known as Most Dangerous Soldiers, or MDS units. These soldiers were created by the Regular Army on the planet Jerra to turn the tide of a brutal, long-running civil war against the rebel Nexrum forces. Unlike ordinary troops, Geist and his counterparts were products of a scientific process that placed them far beyond normal human limits in terms of combat capability, but at a great cost. His designation reflects his purpose: to be the ultimate solitary fighter, bred for strategy, versatility, and overwhelming lethality. This very efficiency, however, proved to be his undoing with the military hierarchy. Geist’s methods were so extraordinarily ferocious and uncontrollable that his own creators came to fear him. Rather than a weapon they could direct, he was a force of nature they had unleashed, leading to his own imprisonment in a state of suspended animation aboard a stasis satellite launched into Jerra’s orbit.
In terms of personality, Geist is defined by a chilling and absolute absence of typical human emotions and desires. He possesses no shred of humanity in his psychological makeup, as his core programming as a killing machine has completely overridden any other potential for connection or empathy. He is utterly indifferent to concepts like romance or companionship. When a female bandit named Paia (or Vaiya) is attracted to his strength and offers herself to him, he shows no desire for her and essentially dismisses her affections. His interactions with others are purely transactional, based on what they can offer for his immediate goals. Geist is not merely a violent soldier; he is a living embodiment of destruction, a figure who exists for battle and little else. This single-mindedness makes him less a man and more an anthropomorphic personification of death and warfare, a being whose only pleasure is found in combat.
Geist’s primary motivation is not driven by ideology, loyalty, or survival, but by a raw, primal need to fight and destroy. After being awakened from his stasis, he does not seek revenge against those who imprisoned him, nor does he align himself with any faction’s political goals. Instead, he is drawn toward conflict for its own sake. This is most powerfully demonstrated in his ultimate act in the first OVA. After infiltrating the Brain Palace to stop the doomsday device known as the Death Force—a system designed to annihilate all life on Jerra—Geist chooses to reactivate it after his treacherous commander, Colonel Krutes, had deactivated it. His motivation is not self-destruction, but the creation of a world without peace, an endless war where he will have an infinite number of enemies to fight. In the sequel, Death Force, this goal remains his core drive, as he spends his time dismantling the very machines he unleashed, not to save humanity, but to continue engaging in battle. He even turns against the remnants of humanity and a precursor MDS unit, Krauser, ensuring the apocalypse continues.
Within the narrative, Geist plays the role of a false protagonist or an anti-villain. He initially appears to be a classic lone hero, a powerful warrior forced into a reluctant alliance with the Regular Army to stop a greater threat. He even dons a distinctive black powered armor suit that becomes his trademark. However, his actions reveal him to be the truest villain of the story. He is not a misunderstood soldier, but an agent of absolute chaos who betrays any group he works with. His role is to be the ultimate apex predator in a world already falling apart, a figure who ensures that no chance for peace or rebuilding is ever possible. He manipulates the conflicts around him to serve his own lust for violence, making him an unpredictable and terrifying force who serves as a dark mirror to the militaristic societies that created him.
Geist’s key relationships are defined by conflict and betrayal rather than bonds of trust or affection. His most significant interaction is with Colonel Krutes, his former superior officer who made the decision to imprison him in stasis. When they meet again, Krutes forms an uneasy alliance with Geist while secretly plotting to have him killed by a security robot at the Death Force control center. Geist survives and repays this betrayal by crushing Krutes’ skull with his bare hands, a moment that solidifies his break from any sense of military loyalty. His connection to Paia is similarly hollow; she follows him out of attraction and admiration for his power, but he remains completely indifferent to her, using her only for her knowledge of the battlefield. In the prequel comic, Ground Zero, his relationship with Lieutenant Leigh Wong and Colonel Stanton is purely professional and strained by his inhuman nature. Stanton initially rejects Geist as a lifeless machine, but in his dying moments, finally accepts him, ordering Geist to keep a deadly secret about Earth’s involvement in the conflict. His only true equal is Krauser, the MD-01 unit, who is his predecessor. Their relationship is a rivalry between two apex predators, culminating in a final hand-to-hand battle to the death.
Geist exhibits virtually no character development or arc across the series. He is a static figure who begins and ends as a single-minded engine of destruction. While the prequel Ground Zero attempts to show him following orders with cold precision before his imprisonment, the Geist of the OVAs is already a fully formed monster. He does not learn from his experiences, feel regret, or change his tactics. If anything, he becomes more powerful and more committed to his nihilistic path, as seen when he goes from a dangerous soldier to the active catalyst for planetary genocide. His lack of growth is a defining aspect of his character; he is a force of nature, and forces of nature do not change, they simply are.
As a Most Dangerous Soldier, Geist possesses a range of superhuman abilities that make him nearly unstoppable. He is genetically engineered to be a superior physical specimen, with strength, speed, agility, and endurance far beyond any normal human soldier. His combat skills are peerless, allowing him to effortlessly defeat multiple opponents in hand-to-hand combat and with various weapons. He is a master strategist and tactician, designed to operate as a solitary fighter and assess battlefield conditions with lethal precision. His most iconic piece of equipment is his custom-modified black powered armor suit, which he acquires early in the first film. This suit enhances his formidable natural abilities and serves as a symbol of his relentless, black-hearted nature. He is also proficient in piloting various vehicles and using advanced future weaponry. Perhaps his most fearsome ability is his sheer indomitable will and pain tolerance; he can withstand incredible damage and continue fighting, making him not just a soldier, but an almost unkillable demon of the battlefield.
