Description
Colonel Krutz is a high-ranking officer in the Regular Army on the planet Jerra, where a brutal civil war rages against the Nexrum forces. He is a seasoned and pragmatic commander, fully aware of the darkest secrets of the military he serves. One of these secrets is the MDS project, a program that created genetically engineered super-soldiers like the protagonist, M.D. Geist. Krutz understands that these soldiers, while incredibly powerful, are also homicidal maniacs too dangerous to control. He personally believes that Geist is responsible for the deaths of fellow Regular Army personnel and was a key figure in the decision to have him imprisoned in a cryogenic stasis satellite.
Throughout the story, Krutz is defined by his mistrust of and deep-seated animosity toward Geist. His primary motivation is to complete his mission, which is to prevent the activation of the "Death Force," a doomsday device designed to exterminate all life on the planet. He leads a commando raid on the central computer, the Brain Palace, to deactivate the system. Despite his hatred for Geist, Krutz is a practical man who recognizes the MDS’s unparalleled combat abilities. He reluctantly allows Geist to accompany his squad on this critical mission, seeing him as a useful, if extremely volatile, tool. During the assault, Krutz demonstrates his courage and concern for his own troops, but he also shows a ruthless willingness to eliminate any threat he perceives, including Geist.
The dynamic between Krutz and Geist is the core of his role in the narrative. He is a foil to the main character; where Geist exists only for battle and chaos, Krutz operates under a military code, however flawed. His key relationship is his antagonism toward Geist, which is rooted in a past where Krutz, as Geist’s commanding officer, concluded that the super-soldier was a menace and pushed for his imprisonment. This past injustice fuels Geist’s desire for personal revenge. As their mission progresses and his entire squad is killed, Krutz's obsession with destroying Geist comes to a head. He turns on the super-soldier, activating a powerful robot to eliminate him, while he himself moves to stop the Death Force. His character shows a clear development from a calculating military leader to a desperate, paranoid man driven to extreme measures by his fear and hatred of the MDS.
Krutz ultimately manages to deactivate the doomsday device, achieving his stated goal. However, he then discovers that the robot he unleashed has failed. Realizing that Geist is still alive and coming for him, he breaks down, laughing uncontrollably before being confronted by the super-soldier. In a brutal end, Geist crushes his head, and in a final act of irony, proceeds to activate the Death Force that Krutz had just shut down. As a regular human, Colonel Krutz possesses no superhuman abilities. His strengths are his tactical knowledge, his strong will, and his extensive understanding of the military’s most dangerous projects. He is a capable commander and a skilled soldier, able to survive the brutal assault on the Brain Palace, but he is ultimately no match for the raw, destructive power of an MDS super-soldier.
