Description
Abelt Dessler is the supreme leader of the Great Garmillas Empire, a position he has held for over a century by the year 2199. He is a charismatic and flamboyant dictator who has united the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds under his rule and launched an invasion into the Milky Way Galaxy. Despite the brutal and absolute nature of his regime, his actions are deeply inspired by a personal and unrequited love for Queen Starsha of the neighboring, pacifist planet Iscandar.
Dessler presents a complex personality. In public and private, he is capable of great charm and generosity, which cultivates genuine loyalty among many of his subjects and subordinates. He has been known to grant citizenship and high-ranking positions to individuals from conquered races, such as his propaganda minister, Miezela Celestella. However, this magnanimity is matched by a ruthless, pragmatic, and often nihilistic core. He has no hesitation in committing violence against his own people or aliens to achieve his goals, and he rules through a combination of personal magnetism and the threat of overwhelming force. He is often bored with the duties of governance and views the political machinations of his underlings, including assassination attempts, as little more than a distraction. He is also known to indulge in the ostentation of his position, enjoying luxurious surroundings, fine drink, and private hot springs.
Dessler's primary motivation is his devotion to Queen Starsha of Iscandar. He met her in his youth and, wanting to realize her ideal of bringing "salvation" to the universe, he decided to achieve this noble purpose through military conquest. He confuses his desire to rule the universe with his love for Starsha, believing that conquering it in her name will win her affection. This paradox is central to his character; he seeks to create a peaceful, unified galaxy under his iron fist as a gift to the woman he loves, who is horrified by his use of her planet's technology as a weapon. While his empire expands, his own homeworld of Garmillas is dying, making the search for a new habitable world a secondary, but critical, driver of his expansionist policies.
In the story of Star Blazers 2199, Dessler serves as the primary antagonist. He oversees the Garmillas campaign against Earth and becomes fixated on the space battleship Yamato, which repeatedly defies and defeats his forces. He sees the ship not just as a threat, but as an amusing and worthy opponent. His role involves orchestrating elaborate traps for the Yamato, including using a biological weapon as entertainment during his empire's millennium celebration. His key relationships include his loyal Minister of Defense, Welte Talan; his treacherous Inspector General, Herm Zoellik, who plots to overthrow him; and the telepathic Celestella, whose affection for him is genuine.
Throughout the series, Dessler's development is marked by a growing personal obsession with the Yamato. After being toppled from power when his capital is destroyed, he becomes an exile, refusing to accept the new provisional government on Garmillas. His desperation leads him to a final, suicidal confrontation with the Yamato, during which he is seemingly killed but is later rescued by the Gatlantis Empire, setting the stage for his return in subsequent stories.
As a leader, Dessler is a master of political manipulation and military strategy. He is a skilled tactician who can craft complex, multi-layered plans, though his arrogance often leads him to underestimate his opponents. His most notable ability is his access to wave motion energy, granted by his relationship with Iscandar, which he weaponizes into the powerful Dessler Cannon, a devastating weapon of mass destruction that he fires from his flagship or his mobile capital, Baleras II.
