Description
Aberdt Desler is the supreme leader, or Eternal Leader, of the Great Garmillas Empire in the anime Star Blazers 2199. He is a central antagonist whose presence looms over the conflict with Earth, though his motivations are far more complex than simple conquest. Born on the planet Garmillas on March 19, 2166, Desler came from an aristocratic family and was thrust into a position of immense responsibility after the death of his older brother, Mathius. He ultimately reunified his fractured homeworld after a civil war, declaring the Great Garmillas Empire and elevating himself to its absolute ruler.

Desler is a study in contradictions, presenting a persona that is both charismatic and ruthless. In public and in private, he can be generous, charming, and genuinely engaging, cultivating sincere loyalty among his inner circle. However, this civility masks a cold and calculating nature. He does not hesitate to order the annihilation of entire cities or the execution of his own subordinates for perceived failings or displays of poor taste, acting with an easy and chilling justification. He is a firm believer in order and control, yet he also appears weary of the burdens of governance and the stagnation of his empire, which contributes to his intense interest in the resilient crew of the Earth ship Yamato.

The primary forces driving Desler are not personal greed, but the salvation of his species and a hidden, unrequited love. As a child, he learned that his home planet was approaching the end of its natural life cycle and would soon become uninhabitable, leaving the Garmillas people without a world to call their own. This promise to find a new home for his people became his life's mission. To achieve this noble goal, he paradoxically chose the path of military expansion, believing that the Great Garmillas Empire must conquer and annex other worlds to survive and thrive. This mission became intertwined with his feelings for Queen Starsha of the planet Iscandar, a pacifist world revered by the Garmillas. Desler fell in love with Starsha in his youth and came to identify with her desire to bring salvation to all intelligent life in the universe, though he tragically misinterpreted this ideal as a goal to be achieved through his own iron-fisted control.

In the story of Star Blazers 2199, Desler serves as the primary architect of Earth's devastation, having masterminded the radioactive bombardment that forces humanity underground. He takes a direct and personal interest in the space battleship Yamato as it battles its way out of the solar system, viewing the ship as a fascinating anomaly and a direct challenge to his absolute authority. His key relationships are defined by his position. He holds a one-sided, romantic admiration for Queen Starsha, which informs his grand strategy. Within his empire, he is served by loyal but often scheming underlings like Director General Heydom Gimleh, who represents the cold, pragmatic, and darker aspects of Garmillas military doctrine. He also shows a paternalistic affection for his young aides, Miezela Celestella and Mirenel Linke, whom he rescued from unjust imprisonment.

Throughout the series, Desler’s character undergoes a notable development. Initially presented as a distant and almost bored absolute dictator, he becomes increasingly engaged and personally invested in the conflict with the Yamato. His hidden romantic feelings for Starsha and his desire for a worthy challenge are brought to the surface. By the end of the 2199 storyline, his absolute rule is shattered, forcing him to confront the consequences of his methods. This defeat sets the stage for his complex evolution in subsequent narratives, where he transitions from a primary antagonist to a reluctant ally in the face of greater threats. As a leader, Desler’s abilities lie not in personal combat, but in his immense political acumen, strategic genius, and charismatic oratory, which allow him to command the loyalty of a vast star-faring empire and project power across the galaxy.
