Description
Kengo Miyazawa is a founding member of the Little Busters and a childhood friend of the protagonist, Riki Naoe. He stands at 180 cm tall and is a student in his second year of high school. His father runs a kendo center, which led Kengo to dedicate himself to the art from a very young age, to the point where he is widely recognized as the school’s kendo champion and is considered a prodigy capable of winning national tournaments. He almost never wears the standard school uniform, preferring his kendo uniform as his everyday attire.
On the surface, Kengo projects an air of honor, sophistication, and calm maturity. He often serves as the straight man to the group's antics, particularly to the foolish behavior of his close friend and rival, Masato Inohara. Beneath this composed exterior, however, he possesses a surprisingly naive and childish desire for fun and camaraderie. His true personality is much sillier than he initially lets on, and in later parts of the story, he undergoes what is referred to as an "awakening," where he fully embraces this foolish side and joins Masato in displaying shockingly eccentric behavior.
Kengo's primary motivation is his fierce loyalty to the Little Busters, a group that saved him from a life devoted solely to kendo. He was recruited as the fourth member after Kyousuke Natsume, Masato, and Rin Natsume defeated his father, freeing him from a rigid and joyless path. This backstory gives him a deep-seated gratitude towards the group and a powerful desire to protect it. He is particularly protective of the younger members, Riki and Rin, and feels a strong responsibility to use his strength to shield them. His personal philosophy is evident in his belief that even when one loses hope in a single pursuit, there will always be something else to live for.
In the main story, Kengo’s role is defined by his initial refusal to participate in the Little Busters' baseball team, citing his focus on an upcoming kendo competition. A crucial event in his personal route involves the character Miyuki Koshiki, a student from the archery club who confides in him. Kengo is unable to help her, and she later attempts suicide, an event that leaves him with deep regret. This traumatic incident is used against him by Kyousuke during a critical baseball match, breaking his concentration and causing a major rift between him and the group's leader. His key relationships include his eternal rivalry with Masato, which is defined by constant fighting and a comparison of their strengths: Masato is stronger with fists, while Kengo is superior with a bamboo sword. He is also the object of affection for Sasami Sasasegawa, a fact he is aware of but largely ignores.
Kengo undergoes significant development during the Refrain arc. When the artificial world begins to crumble, he realizes that facing the harsh reality of a past bus accident may be too much for Riki and Rin. Desperate to preserve their happy days forever, he chooses to support Kyousuke’s opposite goal. He fakes a severe arm injury, pretending he can no longer practice kendo, in order to spend all his time with the group and prevent them from uncovering the truth. His deception is eventually discovered, leading to a decisive baseball match where he is defeated by Rin. This loss forces him to confront his own weakness and acknowledge how strong Riki and Rin have become. Overcome with emotion, he cries openly, finally accepting reality and rejoining the others in their mission. In the real-world bus accident that the group survived, Kengo shielded Rin with his own body, saving her life and cementing his role as a protector.
Kengo’s notable abilities are centered on his mastery of kendo. He is an undefeated champion who claims to have won one hundred consecutive matches. Within the group, he possesses the second-highest starting strength and stamina, combined with good reflexes and agility, making him a valuable player in their baseball games once he chooses to participate.
