Description
Yuta Izaki is a recurring supporting character in the Cardfight!! Vanguard anime, known primarily as the best friend and constant companion of Katsumi Morikawa. His given name is Yuta, though he is almost exclusively referred to by his family name, Izaki, both in the series and by fans.
Izaki is a junior high school student at the start of the series and is frequently seen at the local card shop Card Capital alongside Morikawa. As a cardfighter, his initial record is notably poor, and a running joke within the series is that despite frequently teasing Morikawa about his own losing streak, Izaki has never actually won an on-screen cardfight. His first significant appearance in a match occurs when he is defeated by Aichi Sendou during the shop tournament at Card Capital.
Despite his lack of victories, Izaki is a dedicated and enthusiastic player. His role in the story is largely supportive, often acting as a foil to Morikawa's over-the-top personality. During the events of the Asia Circuit arc, he remains in Japan to help look after Card Capital alongside Taishi Miwa while the main team travels abroad. As the series progresses into the Link Joker arc, Izaki and Morikawa graduate from Hitsue Junior High School and enroll at Hitsue High School, the same school as Toshiki Kai and Miwa. At this point, Izaki joins the school's Cardfight club, demonstrating a more serious commitment to improving his skills.
His motivations become clearer during the VF High School Championship. After witnessing the immense growth in Aichi Sendou's abilities, Izaki is inspired to become stronger and earnestly asks his teammates to help him train. This desire to close the gap between himself and the more prominent fighters shows a more earnest and determined side of his personality, moving beyond his earlier role as comic relief.
In a match against Aichi during the championship preliminaries, Izaki is initially underestimated by the audience due to his lack of tournament experience. He manages to mount a significant comeback by utilizing his Tachikaze deck focused on the Ancient Dragon series. He performs a Break Ride with Ancient Dragon, Tyrannolegend, launching an immensely powerful 41,000 power attack with three critical triggers, which forces Aichi to guard with his entire hand. Although he ultimately loses when his final drive check fails to produce a necessary trigger, his performance earns him applause and respect from the onlookers. This battle represents a key moment of development, validating his efforts and showing his potential as a fighter.
Regarding his notable abilities, Izaki initially uses a hybrid deck combining the Kagero and Tachikaze clans, as noted by Shin Nitta. However, by the third season, he refines his strategy to a pure Tachikaze deck that centers on the Ancient Dragon archetype. His key strategy involves using Break Ride units to launch high-power, multi-critical attacks to overwhelm an opponent's defenses.
Izaki's key relationships are central to his character. His friendship with Katsumi Morikawa is his defining connection, and the two are almost always seen together, providing a humorous duo that balances each other. He also shares a friendly dynamic with the staff and regulars at Card Capital, including Miwa and the protagonist Aichi Sendou, whom he views as a benchmark for strength and a source of inspiration for his own growth as a cardfighter. In later seasons, he is seen continuing to work at Card Capital alongside Miwa, maintaining his connection to the game's community.
