Description
Makoto Kubota is one of the two main protagonists of Wild Adapter. He is a young man with short black hair and black eyes, often seen with a cigarette in hand, his preferred brand being Seven Stars. His background is marked by a degree of emotional detachment and neglect during his upbringing, which contributes to his later demeanor. At the age of sixteen or seventeen, he is scouted by Sanada, a branch manager of the Izumo Association yakuza group, and placed as the head of their youth division. He takes over the position by executing the previous leader, who was a spy from the rival Tojo group, after being offered two guns and correctly choosing the functional one. After seven months in the yakuza, he leaves the organization following the death of his second-in-command, Komiya, who was killed while investigating a dangerous drug known as Wild Adapter. Before departing, Kubota exacts revenge by eliminating twelve high-ranking members of the rival Tojo group. A year later, he discovers a stranger with amnesia in an alley and names him Minoru Tokito. The two begin living together, and Kubota becomes deeply involved in uncovering the mystery of Wild Adapter while helping Tokito recover his past.

Kubota’s personality is layered and contradictory. He is calm, collected, and focused, yet also cool, callous, and aloof. He can be cruel and insensitive, breaking a man’s arm without hesitation, but also displays childish and sweet traits. Those who know him find him terrifying at times, whether because of his actions or simply his smile. He is described as having no clear logic to him: interested in nothing yet fiercely curious about everything, acting like he does not care while showing intense desire in his eyes, caring only for himself yet being masochistic, and needing nothing while clinging to everything. This chaos within tight order is compared to the city itself. He is never seen without a cigarette, and his favored brand is Seven Stars.

His primary motivations shift over the course of the story. Initially, he wanders through life without taking things seriously or looking deeply into himself, with his work in the yakuza providing a pleasant occupation through gang wars, mahjong, and assassinations. His encounter with the drug Wild Adapter changes him forever, driving him to investigate its mystery. His bond with Tokito becomes a central focus, and he becomes extremely possessive of Tokito, treating his wellbeing as the yardstick for what is good or bad. He is driven to uncover Tokito’s past and the truth behind the drug.

In the story, Kubota serves as one of the two central figures, driving the investigation into Wild Adapter alongside Tokito. The narrative is character-driven rather than action-driven, with each volume focusing on a different side character who observes the protagonists. Kubota’s role involves following leads from various contacts, including Kou, a drugstore owner who becomes his employer, and his uncle Kasai, a detective. These leads often turn out to be red herrings or traps, leading to clashes with yakuza groups who also seek the drug. Kubota and Tokito rarely emerge from these encounters unscathed but always manage to survive and continue their quest.

Key relationships include his bond with Minoru Tokito, which forms the emotional core of the series. Kubota is Tokito’s protector and the only person Tokito can rely on. Their companionship is unlikely but deep, with Kubota becoming extremely possessive of Tokito. His relationship with his uncle Kasai is one of mutual reliance for information, though Kasai is a crooked detective who does not question Kubota’s life choices. With Sanada, his former yakuza boss, there is a fascination on Sanada’s part, as he constantly keeps tabs on Kubota. His relationship with Komiya, his former second-in-command, is significant as Komiya’s death triggers Kubota’s departure from the yakuza and sets his investigation into motion.

Kubota develops from a drifting, detached individual into someone with a clear purpose tied to Tokito and the mystery of Wild Adapter. His emotional range expands through his bond with Tokito, though he remains enigmatic and controlled. He becomes more willing to engage with the dangers of the yakuza world and the drug investigation, driven by his need to protect Tokito and uncover the truth.

Notable abilities include his skill in mahjong, where he is a talented and possibly cheating player. He is a combat pragmatist, using improvised weapons, human shields, and brutal interrogation techniques. He is proficient with firearms, often firing one-handed or using gangsta style, and he executes a revenge attack that takes out twelve high-ranking members of the rival gang. His calm demeanor under pressure and ability to assess situations quickly make him a formidable opponent. He is also characterized by his emotional detachment and his ability to be terrifying to both friends and enemies.
