Description
Ao Fukai is the protagonist of the story, a boy of thirteen who lives on the island of Iwato Jima in the United Islands of Okinawa. He is the biological son of Renton Thurston and Eureka, though he was renamed by his guardian, Dr. Toshio Fukai, following his mother's disappearance. Ao’s early life was marked by profound loss. His mother vanished when he was only three years old after being taken by the American military, leaving him in the care of the elderly doctor, who is his only parental figure.

Ao is a brave and empathetic boy who is determined to protect his friends and family. He is more upfront and forthright than his father was at his age, though he shares Renton’s tendency to be shy around girls. He can be reckless and quick to act, often charging into battle without fully considering the consequences, yet he also displays a sharp intelligence and a knack for seeing the core of a situation when it matters most. Despite the loneliness of growing up without his parents, he is a grateful person who feels a strong need to repay them for giving him life. He also has a stubborn streak, including a long-held anger toward his absent father, whom he initially believed had abandoned his mother.

Ao’s primary motivation is to uncover the truth about his origins and find his missing mother. After becoming entangled in a conflict between mysterious creatures called Secrets and the island’s defensive forces, he discovers the RA272 Nirvash, an IFO once piloted by his mother. Ostracized by the islanders who fear his heritage and targeted by various national armies, he decides to join the private organization Generation Bleu and its Pied Piper team. While working with the organization, his mission evolves beyond simply finding Eureka; he becomes driven to protect his world from the Secrets and ultimately to save his parents from a tragic fate.

Within the story, Ao serves as the pilot of the Nirvash, a powerful but technically complex machine he learns to operate through instinct and on-the-job experience. His role as a member of Generation Bleu puts him in direct conflict with a being named Truth, who serves as a primary antagonist. He works alongside his fellow Pied Piper teammates, including the skilled pilot Fleur Blanc and the mysterious Elena Peoples, under the command of Captain Ivica Tanović. His most significant relationship is with his childhood friend Naru Arata, one of the few people on the island who did not treat him as an outcast. His connection to his parents, though they are mostly absent, is the emotional core of his journey. He holds a deep love for his mother Eureka based on his early memories, while his feelings toward his father Renton evolve from resentment to respect as he learns the truth of Renton's sacrifices.

Ao undergoes significant development throughout the series. Initially a somewhat isolated and angry boy, he grows into a more resolute and selfless individual. He begins as an inexperienced pilot who is unskilled but powerful, often clashing with the more professional members of Generation Bleu. Over time, he matures into a more capable and strategic thinker. His personal arc culminates in a final, selfless act where he risks his own existence to rewrite history and ensure his parents can be together, accepting that he may never see them again. This decision marks his transition from a boy seeking his family to a hero willing to sacrifice his own happiness for theirs.

Ao possesses several notable abilities that set him apart. He is a hybrid, half-human and half-Coralian, which grants him unique sensory perceptions. He can see beyond the normal visual spectrum, including infrared and ultraviolet light, as well as the trapar particles that are the "path of the wind". This ability is a result of his altered genetic makeup, which also makes him susceptible to being influenced by trapar. Physically, Ao has a pale complexion and his mother’s purple eyes with distinctive red rings. His natural hair color is brown, but after piloting the Nirvash for the first time, it permanently changes to a bright turquoise. He also demonstrates a natural, intuitive talent for piloting machines, becoming an effective if untrained pilot at an improbably young age.
