Description
Mael serves as one of the Four Archangels of the Goddess Clan, a powerful yet compassionate figure who deeply admired his older brother Ludociel. Wielding immense magical power, particularly his Grace "Sunshine," Mael became the strongest Archangel at high noon. This prowess contrasted sharply with his clan's initial rejection of him as a coward incapable of harming even an insect. He harbored unrequited feelings for the goddess Elizabeth, whose affections lay solely with Meliodas. Mael's existence fractured during the Holy War 3,000 years ago when the demon Gowther cast a forbidden spell altering memories across all clans. This spell erased Mael's true identity, reforging him into "Estarossa," an illegitimate son of the Demon King and a member of the Ten Commandments. Believing Mael killed by Estarossa, the Goddess Clan used the Coffin of Eternal Darkness to seal the Demon Clan.
As Estarossa, he displayed a relaxed demeanor masking a sadistic and cold nature, especially toward Meliodas, whom he resented for betraying the Demon Clan. He possessed the Commandment of Love, which inflicted loss of physical strength on those harboring hatred. Estarossa wielded significant power, including the ability "Full Counter" to reflect magical attacks. Driven by a hunger for power, he absorbed the Commandments of Truth, Reticence, and Purity from fellow Commandments like Galand and Derieri, whom he killed. This absorption caused physical mutations and escalating mental instability due to the Commandments' corrupting influence. A pivotal battle at Heaven's Theater shattered the illusion when Elizabeth's realization broke Gowther's memory spell, restoring Mael's true identity.
Regaining his memories plunged Mael into profound remorse for his indiscriminate killing of demons during the Holy War and his actions as Estarossa. This remorse intensified when Gowther used "Invasion" to enter his mind, revealing Mael had killed Gowther's lover, Glariza – the reason Gowther chose him for the memory spell. This revelation allowed Mael to expel the absorbed Commandments, freeing himself from their corruption. Liberated, he joined the Seven Deadly Sins and their allies to end the Holy War.
In the film "Cursed by Light," set post-war, Mael returned to Britannia to warn the Seven Deadly Sins of an impending attack. The revived Goddess Clan, acting under orders from the Supreme Deity who had observed events through Elizabeth's eyes, sought to restart the Holy War to maintain cosmic balance between light and darkness. Mael aided in the defense of Liones, confronting the Supreme Deity alongside Meliodas, Zeldris, and others. The Supreme Deity declared the eternal conflict intrinsic to the Goddess and Demon Clans' existence, but Meliodas and Zeldris defeated her, leading to her demise.
Mael's abilities encompass flight via angelic wings and mastery of light-based magic. His Grace "Sunshine" granted immense power peaking at midday; he later augmented his strength using absorbed Commandments as substitutes after losing his Grace. Following the purge of the Commandments, he retained his Archangel powers, including techniques like "Kyusai no Ya" for painless death and "Blackout" to nullify light-based attacks. His arc concluded with him serving as a messenger and ally in the post-Holy War world, symbolizing reconciliation and the end of cyclical vengeance.
