Movie
Description
Doc Saito, known fully as Mechanic Saito, serves as the primary engineer for Apollon Media, the corporation responsible for managing the superheroes in Stern Bild City. His role in the story, particularly as depicted in Tiger & Bunny The Movie -The Rising-, is that of the technical genius who develops and maintains the powered suits and various gadgets used by the heroes, most notably Kotetsu T. Kaburagi, also known as Wild Tiger, and his partner Barnaby Brooks Jr.
Saito possesses a distinctive and somewhat contradictory personality. In face-to-face interactions, he is characterized by an extremely quiet and soft-spoken nature, often speaking in a voice that is barely audible, which can make him difficult to understand. This reserved demeanor changes dramatically when he communicates through electronic devices, such as radios and intercoms. In these situations, his voice becomes disproportionately loud and brash, often startling the heroes on the other end. He is deeply enthusiastic and proud of his work, exhibiting a particular excitement when demonstrating his inventions or observing how the heroes test them. This enthusiasm sometimes manifests as a mildly sadistic or mischievous streak, as he seems to take a noticeable, almost gleeful pleasure in putting Kotetsu through rigorous or uncomfortable suit tests.
Saito's primary motivation is the application of his formidable technical skills to create innovative, and sometimes eccentric, equipment for Apollon Media's heroes. He is driven by a passion for invention itself, which leads him to frequently add new upgrades and features to the heroes' suits. While many of these additions are practical, Saito also has a well-documented penchant for installing components that are flashy but have little to no tactical value. A prime example of this tendency is his creation of the Good Luck Mode for Tiger and Barnaby's suits. This mode added large, dramatic armor pieces that formed a giant fist and leg, which activated when the heroes' power was nearly depleted. Saito later revealed that the impressive-looking parts and their special effects were entirely for show and contributed nothing to the heroes' actual strength; their victory was instead due to their own excellent teamwork. Despite its uselessness as a combat function, the aesthetic of Good Luck Mode proved to be a morale booster.
Within the narrative, Doc Saito plays a crucial but non-combative role as the indispensable support from the sidelines. His technical expertise is often the key to overcoming significant obstacles. For instance, he is responsible for developing a specialized sleep chamber for Barnaby, designed to deprive him of external stimuli and allow him to access his memories more clearly through dreams. His intelligence and careful nature also prove vital during infiltration missions, where he is able to guide heroes through secure locations and, on one notable occasion, figure out how to activate the safety mode on the dangerous H-01 robots, a system originally invented by Barnaby's parents, thereby saving the heroes. His key relationships are primarily professional. He interacts most frequently with Kotetsu and Barnaby, who are the direct users of his most advanced creations. His behavior towards them is a mix of professional pride in his work and a personal, teasing enjoyment of their reactions to his more outlandish experiments.
In terms of development, Saito remains a consistent source of technical marvels and comic relief throughout the story. His core personality traits and his role as the brilliant but quirky engineer do not undergo a dramatic arc of personal change, but his deep expertise proves repeatedly essential to the heroes' success. Regarding his abilities, Saito is an extraordinarily talented inventor and engineer. His notable creations include the armored suits for the heroes, the Good Luck Mode add-ons, Barnaby's memory-access sleep chamber, and miniature spy cameras. He is also credited with developing the Hyper Nano System, which stores the heroes' suits within a Storage Bangle using nanotechnology. His analytical mind is sharp enough to reverse-engineer the safety protocols of advanced robotics, cementing his status as a critical asset to the team despite his lack of superpowers.
