Description
Ayaka Sajō is the central protagonist of Fate/Prototype, serving as the Master of Saber in the Second Tokyo Holy Grail War. She is a young teenager with medium-length brown hair and blue eyes, typically seen wearing a school uniform. A defining physical trait is her glasses, which she uses to intentionally obscure her features. Without them, her hair and eye color appear noticeably brighter, revealing a striking appearance that draws the attention of other characters.

Born into the distinguished Sajō family of magi, Ayaka has lived in the shadow of her older sister, Manaka Sajō, a prodigy of unparalleled talent who was connected to the Swirl of the Root from birth. This comparison has left Ayaka with a deep-seated inferiority complex regarding her own mundane abilities. Her self-assessment is overwhelmingly negative, describing herself as having a gloomy, cowardly, and unsociable personality. This lack of confidence shapes her reclusive lifestyle; she lives alone in the family mansion and generally keeps her distance from others.

Ayaka's primary motivation is a powerful desire to avoid the Holy Grail War altogether. Eight years prior to the main events, she witnessed the previous war, which resulted in the deaths of both her father and her sister. This trauma has made her adamantly refuse any involvement, viewing the war as a personal death sentence. Her father had foreseen her participation, telling her that a day would come when she too would fight, a prophecy she vehemently rejected. Despite her rejection of the conflict, she is forced into the war when she is attacked by Lancer and inadvertently summons Saber to save her life.

In the story of Fate/Prototype, Ayaka is an unwilling participant who initially tries to barricade herself from the conflict. Her role evolves as she forms a bond with her Servant, Saber, whom she comes to see as an ideal prince and protector. She finds herself forming a tense rivalry and occasional alliance with Lancer and his master, Misaya Reiroukan, interacting with them more as reluctant acquaintances than mortal enemies. She also attracts the unwanted attention of Archer, who becomes infatuated with her appearance without her glasses and declares his intention to claim her as his queen. A pivotal point in her role occurs when her Command Seals are stolen and Saber is corrupted by the antagonist Sancraid Phahn. At this moment, she forms a contract with the masterless Lancer to rescue her Servant, shifting from a passive victim to an active fighter.

Ayaka's key relationships are defined by the trauma of her past. Her relationship with her deceased sister, Manaka, is the source of her自卑感, and the memory of Manaka's genius and cruelty haunts her. In the previous war, Manaka grew jealous of the attention Saber gave a young Ayaka and attempted to sacrifice her sister to the Grail, an act that only stopped when Saber killed Manaka. Her relationship with Saber is therefore layered; he is both the embodiment of her childhood ideal of a prince and the man who killed her sister. He becomes her primary source of emotional support and trust, pushing her to overcome her fears. Her relationship with Lancer begins with him trying to kill her, but after both lose their original Masters, they form a pragmatic and mutually respectful contract driven by a common goal.

Throughout the narrative, Ayaka undergoes significant development. She begins as a traumatized young woman who refuses to fight and believes she is worthless. Her cowardice is not born of apathy but of a specific fear of killing, as she cannot even bring herself to sacrifice a pigeon for a ritual, leading her to use her own blood. Under Saber's influence, she gradually sheds her insecurities. When she loses him, she makes the conscious choice to fight for his sake, declaring that even someone like her can choose to fight. Her arc transforms her from a reluctant prisoner of fate into a determined master who actively pursues a resolution to the war.

As a magus, Ayaka holds the lowest Master rank, the Seventh Position, also known as the Principality. Her magical circuits are of average quality and quantity. She initially practices traditional black magic, also known as witchcraft, but finds herself unskilled and frustrated by her lack of talent. Saber suggests she abandon this path in favor of Formalcraft, an elementary system of elemental conversion that uses rituals and magic circles. Though she derides it as magic for dummies, she discovers she possesses a remarkable, natural affinity for it, allowing her to convert and manipulate the five elements. Her other notable abilities include the power to manipulate plants, making them grow rapidly to barricade entrances or entangle foes. She is also capable of using crow feathers as high-velocity projectiles, fired like bullets from a ring she wears. Strangely, she has a close, unexplained affinity with crows in general.
