Description
In the anime Nekomonogatari (Black), the character known as Shinobu Oshino is presented as a young, blonde girl with pale skin and golden eyes, appearing to be about eight years old. She is the greatly weakened remnant of a legendary and powerful vampire originally named Kiss-shot Acerola-orion Heart-under-blade, who was once known by titles such as the Iron-blooded, Hot-blooded, Cold-blooded Vampire and the Queen of Aberrations. Her current state is the result of a series of events during spring break, when she was saved by a high school student named Koyomi Araragi. After he offered his blood to save her life, she transformed him into her vampire servant. To restore his humanity, Koyomi ultimately drank her blood, which drastically reduced her own power, existence, and physical form to her current childlike state, leaving her dependent on his blood for survival.
During the events of Nekomonogatari (Black), Shinobu lives in the abandoned cram school building with the supernatural expert Meme Oshino. She is often referred to only as "Vampire-chan" at this time, as she has not yet been given the name Shinobu Oshino. Her personality in this arc is marked by silence and lethargy; she rarely speaks and maintains a passive, seemingly disinterested demeanor. This quiet resentment is partly due to her failed plan to have Koyomi kill her, which would have allowed him to fully regain his humanity. Since he refused and instead chose to take her power, she harbors a grudge, leading to their strained, silent coexistence. Despite this, she is not without emotion. She shows a notable, childlike interest in sweet foods, particularly donuts, which Koyomi brings to her. Her true nature is also that of a prideful, arrogant, and talkative being, but her weakened circumstances and grudge against Koyomi have suppressed these traits.
Shinobu's role in the story of Nekomonogatari (Black) is crucial during its climax. After Koyomi is grievously wounded in a fight against the oddity known as Black Hanekawa and prays for five days and nights, Shinobu finally intervenes. She lends Koyomi the legendary oddity-killing sword, Kokorowatari, also known as Heartspan, which is capable of cutting spiritual bodies without harming the physical form. In a moment of desperation, Koyomi drinks a large amount of Shinobu's blood, temporarily restoring some of her vampiric power. This allows her to heal his fatal injuries and use the sword to successfully extract the "Sawari Neko" (Curiosity Cat) from Tsubasa Hanekawa, resolving the central conflict. For her role in defeating the oddity, she is given the name "Shinobu Oshino" by Meme Oshino as a form of recognition and binding, marking a significant step in her new existence. She also receives a pilot's helmet with goggles, which she wears at this time.
Her key relationship is with Koyomi Araragi, which is complex and forms the core of her character. They are bound by a shared fate, often described as being two sides of the same coin. Because she is sealed within his shadow after these events, their lives are intrinsically linked; if Shinobu were to die, Koyomi would become fully human, and if Koyomi were to die, Shinobu would regain her full power. This mutual dependence creates a deep, if unspoken, connection. During her time in the cram school, she also resides with Meme Oshino, whose expertise in the supernatural provides a fragile peace for her and Koyomi.
Development in Nekomonogatari (Black) is shown through her actions rather than her words. She transitions from a silent, resentful figure living in the shadows of the cram school to an active participant who saves Koyomi's life and resolves the case. This event is a catalyst for her eventual reconciliation with Koyomi in later stories, as her lending of the sword and healing power prove her underlying care for him, despite her professed hatred. The giving of her name and helmet also symbolizes a new beginning and a fragile acceptance of her current, diminished existence.
Regarding her notable abilities in this form, Shinobu retains only a fraction of her former power. However, she still possesses impressive capabilities. She has a powerful healing factor, capable of regenerating from severe injuries, and her blood can also heal others. She can generate matter, create objects from her body, and has superhuman strength, speed, and agility. One of her most significant abilities is wielding the Kokorowatari, a sword that exists only to cut aberrations. She can also submerge herself and sink into shadows, a power she notably uses to live within Koyomi's shadow. In her weakened state, she is susceptible to sunlight, which can harm her, but many traditional vampire weaknesses like crosses and garlic have a reduced effect because she is no longer a "true" vampire. Her survival hinges entirely on consuming Koyomi Araragi's blood.
