Description
Gisen Yagyuu is a Master Samurai who first appears in the second half of the first anime season before playing a significant role in Samurai Bride. She is a young woman with long white or silver hair and a slender but well-proportioned figure. Her most distinguishing features are a red eyepatch worn over her right eye and a padlocked black choker around her neck, which hints at her masochistic disposition and perceived role as a servant. Her typically neutral expression contrasts with the dark intentions she often conceals. Beneath the eyepatch, her right eye is a heterochromatic "magic eye" or "evil eye" with a reptilian pupil that glows red and reflects a pentagram, symbolizing her contract with her general.

Gisen’s personality is a complex web of contradictions. On the surface, she presents herself as an assertive yet sexually submissive young woman, openly referring to herself as a "slave" and calling Muneakira Yagyuu her "Master". She freely uses her attractiveness to manipulate others and enjoys playing the role of a seductress. However, this feline and erotic affectation conceals a far darker and more ruthless interior. Having been trained from a young age in the Yagyuu clan's covert operations, including assassination, she possesses a cruel and calculating side. Despite this, she is also starved for affection and exhibits both sadistic and masochistic tendencies, making her a dangerous individual whose loyalties are not always clear.

Gisen’s primary motivation is tied to her true master and love interest, Amakusa Shirou. She is fiercely loyal to him and her actions in the first season are driven by the goal of reviving him to once again threaten Japan. In Samurai Bride, after being resurrected from her apparent death, her motives become more ambiguous. While she still serves Amakusa, she takes advantage of being under watch at the Yagyuu dojo to conduct her own schemes. She claims to want to help the group counter a new threat, but her actions often involve manipulating Muneakira’s other Master Samurai to test various theories, such as the conditions for creating the legendary Samurai Bride. This serves her own curiosity and possibly future plans for her master's return, but also shows a more measured, long-term approach rather than outright aggression.

In the story of Samurai Bride, Gisen serves as a primary instigator of discord within Muneakira’s harem. After her return, the group decides she is too dangerous to leave unattended, so they keep her at the dojo under surveillance. She immediately begins meddling, pulling aside the other girls—Yukimura Sanada, Sen Tokugawa, and Kanetsugu Naoe—to give each one false or misleading advice on how to win Muneakira’s affection and become the Samurai Bride. Her goal is not necessarily to cause lasting harm but to use them as test subjects to observe what triggers the transformation, thereby verifying how to achieve the power for herself or for Amakusa. Despite her troublemaking, she is not purely malicious in this season. She develops a genuine, if twisted, affection for Jubei Yagyuu, whom she calls "big sister," and ultimately intervenes to save her life from an attack by the Dark Samurai Kojiro Sasaki.

Gisen's key relationships are central to her character arc. Her most important bond is with Amakusa Shirou, her general and the object of her deep loyalty and romantic feelings. Her relationship with Jubei Yagyuu is pivotal; after some initial friction, she becomes attached to Jubei, viewing her as a sister figure. This connection is what ultimately leads her to protect Jubei, demonstrating that her need for familial affection can override her mission. Her relationship with Muneakira is transactional and manipulative, as she addresses him as "Master" not out of genuine loyalty, but as part of her masochistic performance and an attempt to possibly overwrite her contract with Amakusa. She enjoys teasing and tempting him, much to the chagrin of the other girls.

Gisen undergoes a notable, if subtle, development from a clear antagonist to a semi-neutral or even allied figure. In her first appearance, she is a straightforward spy and assassin sent to serve her master's goal of conquering Japan, leading to her death in battle against Jubei. Upon her return in Samurai Bride, she is less overtly hostile. Her actions are defined more by cunning experiments and manipulation than by direct violence. By saving Jubei and sharing information about the Dark Samurai, she earns a tentative place within the group, transforming from a mortal enemy into a troublesome, unpredictable ally who fights alongside the main cast to protect the Chingo Stone, a key source of spiritual energy in Japan. Her character evolves from a slave to a single purpose into a more independent actor, though her long-term goals remain tied to her master.

Gisen possesses several notable abilities. Her most powerful weapon is her "evil eye," the special eye hidden behind her eyepatch. This magical eye allows her to control a single person, forcing them to follow her commands. However, this ability has limitations: she must maintain eye contact for a set period to activate it, the control is unbreakable, and she can only impose one command at a time. As a Master Samurai, she can also enter a battle mode that grants her immense combat power. In this state, she wields a unique double-bladed weapon called Magatsuki, which is a large pair of scissors that can be split into two separate swords for dual-wielding. Her signature element is ice; she can generate and manipulate ice for attacks, with techniques such as Hjoranjin, which involves throwing sharp ice fragments, and Zettai Reido, an ability that freezes and shatters an enemy. Though her true master is Amakusa, she is a formidable fighter who relies on both her psychological manipulation and direct physical prowess.
