Description
Gisen Yagyu is a central figure in the Hyakka Ryouran series, whose role becomes particularly significant in the second season, Samurai Bride. A young woman of slender yet curvaceous build, she is instantly recognizable by the red and gold eyepatch covering her right eye. Her long white hair and distinctive accessory, a padlocked collar, contribute to her enigmatic and somewhat provocative appearance. Underneath the eyepatch, she possesses a heterochromatic eye with a red pentagram, a mark that signifies a contract and is the source of her unique power.

Gisen's personality is a complex blend of seeming contradictions, shaped by a harsh upbringing. From a young age, she was trained in assassination and covert operations as part of the Ura-Yagyu clan, which instilled in her a notably ruthless and calculating nature. Externally, she presents herself with a seductive and submissive demeanor, often referring to herself as a slave and addressing the protagonist, Muneakira Yagyu, as master. This masochistic posture, however, coexists with a sadistic streak, revealing a personality that is both self-denying and controlling. Her true nature is deeply cynical and driven by a hidden agenda, concealing a profound hunger for affection that stems from her isolated past.

Gisen enters the narrative in a dramatic fashion, falling from the sky and into Muneakira's arms, initially claiming to be the long-lost sister of another sword princess, Jubei Yagyu. While she initially feigns friendliness and amnesia, her role is that of an infiltrator with a clear mission. She is the current head of the Ura-Yagyu clan and serves as the sword princess for the sinister Amakasu Shiro. Her primary objective is to break Muneakira's existing contract with Jubei, using her manipulative skills and powers to sway him to her cause. Her role evolves significantly over time; after being defeated in a confrontation with Jubei, she disappears but later returns in Samurai Bride, taking on a more ambiguous, semi-neutral position. She chooses to reside at the Yagyu dojo, assisting Muneakira and his companions while remaining an enigmatic and untrustworthy presence.

Her key relationships are defined by her shifting allegiances. Her connection to Muneakira is central, initially viewing him as a tool for her mission but eventually showing a genuine interest in his character. With Jubei, her dynamic is fraught with rivalry and familial tension; she pretends to be Jubei's sister and receives the nickname Gittan from her, yet their relationship is defined by a lethal confrontation. Amakasu Shiro is her original master and general, to whom she shows fierce loyalty. Upon joining the main group, she interacts with the other sword princesses like Senhime, Yukimura Sanada, and Kanetsugu Naoe, often with friction, and engages in failed experiments with them, further highlighting her untrustworthy nature.

Throughout Samurai Bride, Gisen's character development is marked by a gradual shift from antagonist to a reluctant ally. Her powers weaken after her return, and she is shown trying to regain them over time. Despite her continued deceptions, such as misleading Jubei with false training methods, she eventually contributes to the group's defense, fighting to protect a Guardian Stone and showcasing the true potential of her abilities. This arc moves her from a position of pure manipulation to one of begrudging integration with the Yagyu dojo.

Gisen's notable abilities are formidable and distinct. Her primary weapon is a unique, large scissor-like sword that can be separated into two blades, allowing her to fight with a dual-wielding style. Her most powerful asset is the Evil Eye hidden beneath her eyepatch. This magical eye can control the actions of others with a single command, but it comes with limitations: she must maintain eye contact for a period of time to activate it, can only impose one command at a time, and cannot use it continuously during prolonged battles. In Master Samurai mode, which she accesses through her contract with Amakasu Shiro, she gains the ability to control ice, adding a potent elemental power to her combat repertoire.
