Description
Inshun Hōzōin is a petite young girl who appears in the second anime season as a Dark Samurai, having inherited the soul of the legendary master of the Hōzōin-ryu spear technique. Her existence is the result of a mysterious summoning process that came at a great cost, as this invocation stripped away her natural voice. To compensate for this loss and to utilize her supernatural abilities, she wears a mechanical mask over her mouth. This apparatus allows her to produce a special resonant sound wave that grants her the power to command animals, turning them into simple, makeshift shikigami that do her bidding.
Despite the silent and somewhat eerie impression given by her mask during combat, Inshun possesses a notable degree of humanity in her daily life. She often removes the apparatus when not fighting, and though she remains a person of few words, she reveals a quietly delightful personality. Her small stature contrasts sharply with her chosen weapon, a massive jumonji cross spear that is significantly longer than she is tall. In peaceful moments, she demonstrates an innocent enjoyment of simple pleasures, such as eating heartily, with a particular fondness for devouring an entire plate of omelette rice in one go.
Inshun's role in the story begins with an enigmatic challenge, as she places a curse on the protagonist Muneakira Yagyū, demanding that he bring her the samurai Jūbei as a condition for her cooperation. Her motivations are complex, driven by a longing for a true and honorable duel with a worthy opponent. She feels a profound connection to Jūbei, and a significant turning point occurs when she happily reacts to being given the nickname Inko-chan by her, showing a tender and almost playful side that contrasts with her status as a Dark Samurai. She also demonstrates an unusual connection to the natural world, seemingly able to understand the language of monkeys, which allows her to guide the character Sarutobi Sasuke to the Yagyū Dojo.
Throughout the narrative, Inshun participates in various events, such as a maid competition where she engages in a flag battle against Gisen Yagyū, emerging victorious following Gisen's disqualification. However, her primary arc is steeped in tragedy. As a revenant aware of the peculiar nature of her existence, she holds hidden knowledge about the resurrection of samurai. When a mysterious assailant later revealed to be part of a greater evil known as the Great Sword Demon threatens the protective stone, Inshun chooses to resist. She confronts Muneakira and Kojirō Sasaki in a determined effort to prevent destruction. Despite her resolve, she is ultimately overpowered and taken over by vengeful spirits.
In her darkest moment, even as tears stream down her face, Inshun expresses her true desire not to be a tool of evil but to engage in a proud warrior's duel. She pleads with Jūbei to end her life, wishing to die by the hands of someone she respects rather than live as a puppet. Forced to fight against her will, she turns on her companions until she is rescued by Jūbei, who becomes a Samurai Bride. This act of salvation allows Inshun to finally break free from the vengeful spirits' control, after which she finds peace and ascends, concluding her tragic story arc. Her notable abilities include masterful use of her oversized cross spear in combat, demonstrating significant power and skill, as well as the unique animal control granted by her mechanical mask.
