Description
Juubei Yagyuu is the central heroine of Samurai Bride, continuing her role from the first series, Hyakka Ryouran: Samurai Girls. She is a red-haired young woman whose past is shrouded in mystery. At the beginning of the story, she has no memories of her former life and her true connection to the legendary swordsman Mitsuyoshi Yagyuu, whose name she claims, is unknown. She is first discovered when she unexpectedly appears at the Yagyuu dojo, instantly latching onto the young master of the dojo, Muneakira Yagyuu, whom she affectionately calls onii-chan (big brother). This lack of memory defines her initial state, making her heavily reliant on those who take her in.

In her normal state, Juubei’s personality is distinctly childlike and capricious. She is playful, often giving people unique nicknames, and acts with a sense of reckless abandon that can lead to dangerous situations. She displays little to no shame regarding her body, even in front of Muneakira. This innocent and somewhat clumsy demeanor contrasts sharply with her other persona. When she kisses Muneakira, the soul of the swordsman Mitsuyoshi awakens within her, transforming her into a Master Samurai. In this transformed state, her personality becomes the opposite of her normal self: she becomes fierce, dangerously powerful, and mature, though she retains a strong sense of honor as a warrior. The pressure of hosting this powerful soul creates an internal conflict, as the two distinct personalities effectively share one body.

Juubei’s primary motivation throughout the series is to protect Muneakira and her new-found family at the Yagyuu dojo. She displays unwavering loyalty to her onii-chan, who serves as her general. Her role in the story is that of the primary fighter and the titular character. Initially, she struggles with her own power and the instability of her dual personalities. A central part of her journey involves coming to terms with both aspects of herself; the childlike girl and the powerful, sadistic warrior. By the end of Samurai Bride, she achieves this personal development, unifying her two halves into a single, complete identity.

Her key relationship is undoubtedly with Muneakira Yagyuu, as the bond between a Master Samurai and her general is the source of her power. She also interacts with the other Master Samurai, including Sen Tokugawa and Yukimura Sanada, forming a rivalrous but ultimately friendly alliance. A significant relationship is with her sister, Gisen Yagyuu, who serves as a rival. Later in the second season, she befriends Musashi, a Dark Samurai, giving him the nickname Mucchan, showing her ability to form bonds even with former enemies.

Juubei’s development is the core emotional arc of the series. She starts as an amnesiac with a fractured psyche, unable to fully control her own power. Her Master Samurai form is initially incomplete because Muneakira had not fully awakened as a general, which in turn caused her power to conflict with her innocent personality. After a series of battles and personal trials, including a confrontation with her sister, she fully awakens, achieving complete control over her body and power. In the final conflict of Samurai Bride, she is chosen to become Muneakira’s Samurai Bride. In this form, she gains immense power, combining the strengths of her fellow Master Samurai, which allows her to purify corrupted souls and defeat the primary antagonist.

Notable abilities are central to her role. In her incomplete regular state, her combat power is extremely low. However, as a Master Samurai, her power is immense. She wields a daishō set of two Japanese swords, which are inscribed with Muneakira’s name. She is an incredibly fast and strong swordswoman who can control a black aura to enhance her attacks. In her ultimate Samurai Bride form, her power level increases dramatically. In this state, she dons a new outfit that includes cat-like features, a jetpack, and a large gun-blade, combining traditional samurai aesthetics with mecha elements. She radiates a purifying light capable of bringing peace to the dead and defeating powerful evil spirits.
