TV-Series
Description
Aichi is the central protagonist of the Cardfight!! Vanguard series. He is a young man with a slim build, blue hair, and a characteristic long bang that falls over the right side of his face. His appearance is somewhat youthful and delicate, often described as being gentle or even pretty. In the early parts of the story, he is a student at Hitsue Middle School, wearing a gray uniform, and later transfers to Miyaji Academy, where he wears a black blazer with red accents. His birthday is June 6th.
Aichi's background is defined by loneliness. As a child, he was frequently bullied and had few friends, leading to a shy, timid, and withdrawn personality. His life changed dramatically during a fateful encounter with a boy named Toshiki Kai. Kai, seeing Aichi being bullied, gave him a rare and powerful card called Blaster Blade, telling him to imagine himself as strong and courageous as the knight depicted on it. This single act became the cornerstone of Aichi's life; he treasured the card as a symbol of courage and began building a deck in the hopes of one day meeting Kai again to play against him.
The core of Aichi's personality is a journey from weakness to strength. He is naturally gentle, humble, and kind, often seeing the good in others, even his former bullies. Outside of a cardfight, he can be nervous, socially awkward, and somewhat dense, failing to notice the romantic feelings that characters like Kourin Tatsunagi have for him. However, when he engages in a game of Vanguard, he transforms into a focused, confident, and radiant individual. His passion for the game allows him to break out of his shell, make friends, and find a sense of belonging. His primary motivation is not simply winning, but growing as a person and a fighter, driven by his admiration for Kai and his desire to protect the bonds he has formed with his friends.
Aichi's role in the story is that of a hero who rises from humble beginnings. He is the founder and president of the Miyaji Academy Cardfight Club. As a member of Team Q4, he competes in national and international tournaments. He possesses a mysterious and powerful ability known as PSYqualia, which allows him to hear the voices of cards from the planet Cray and gives him glimpses of future moves during a fight. This power is a double-edged sword. While it can lead him to victory, it also corrupts him if used with the wrong intentions. This is most clearly seen when he is manipulated by his rival Ren Suzugamori into using a Shadow Paladin deck, causing him to become arrogant and ruthless. A key part of his development is learning to reject the corrupting influence of PSYqualia and trust in his own skills and the bond with his true avatar, Blaster Blade.
His key relationships are the driving force of his character arc. His relationship with Toshiki Kai is the most significant. Kai is his initial savior, his idol, his rival, and the person whose respect he most desires. He forms a deep friendship with his teammates: the strong-willed Kamui Kageura, the calm and analytical Misaki Tokura, and later the dedicated Kourin Tatsunagi. These friends support him, pull him back from the brink of darkness, and give him the strength to face overwhelming threats.
Throughout the series, Aichi undergoes profound development. He evolves from a bullied victim into a world-class champion and leader. He experiences a fall from grace when corrupted by PSYqualia, only to be redeemed by his friends. In later story arcs, he makes a great sacrifice, willingly becoming the host for the destructive alien entity known as Link Joker to seal it away, erasing himself from the memories of almost everyone to protect them. This act demonstrates his ultimate growth into a selfless hero who bears a terrible burden for the sake of others.
His abilities extend beyond PSYqualia. Aichi is a highly intelligent and strategic fighter, known for his ability to adapt his deck and discover new synergies during a match. He is also a powerful spiritual entity, described as the most important listener of prayers for the planet Cray. As the host for the Link Joker seed, he gains additional powers, including teleportation and the ability to manipulate memories. His fighting style changes with his evolution, starting with the Royal Paladins and the noble Blaster Blade, shifting to the aggressive Shadow Paladins while corrupted, and later adopting the Gold Paladins and their sub-clan, the Liberators, which represent his own path forward independent of Kai.
