Description
Atlas serves as the secondary antagonist in the Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos movie. A first lieutenant in the Cretan military, he was originally assigned as a security chief to protect the Crichton family, a group of alchemists. However, his true goal was to seize their research and claim the powerful alchemical artifact known as the Sanguine Star. To this end, he murdered Julia and Ashleigh Crichton’s parents and then attacked the young Ashleigh, stealing his identity, the skin from his face, and a portion of his body bearing a unique tattoo that served as a map to the Star.
Following this, Atlas took on the alias of a man named Melvin Voyager and deliberately committed a crime to earn a five-year sentence in Central Prison. This was a calculated move to disappear into the Amestrian prison system, as he needed to wait for Julia Crichton to grow older so that her matching tattoo would become large enough to align with the one he had stolen from Ashleigh. Two months before his parole, he read a newspaper article about Julia’s arrest and broke out of prison using his alchemy, drawing the attention of Edward and Alphonse Elric.
Atlas is characterized by his manipulative and ruthless nature. He demonstrates a complete lack of loyalty, betraying every ally he makes to further his own ambition. He stabs his own co-conspirators, the freedom fighter Miranda and his secret associate Raul, to use their blood for a massive transmutation. He also emotionally manipulates Julia by posing as her long-lost brother, Ashleigh, exploiting her grief and desire to be reunited with her family to set the stage for creating the Sanguine Star. His primary motivation is sheer power; he seeks the Star not to liberate the people of Milos, but to forge an independent nation that he and Raul would rule, one stronger than either Creta or Amestris.
In the story, Atlas is the primary driving force behind the conflict in Table City. His grand scheme involves using a city-wide transmutation circle and the blood of countless soldiers to create the Sanguine Star. To complete the ritual, he cuts the stolen tattoo from his own body and places it over Julia’s matching mark, creating a complete map. His role as an antagonist is defined by his deception, as he seamlessly shifts between the identities of a prisoner, a helpful brother, and a power-hungry traitor.
While Atlas briefly succeeds in creating the Star, Julia swallows it to prevent him from using its power. His key relationships are built on lies: he is a false brother to Julia, a false ally to the Black Bats, and a false prisoner to the Amestrian authorities. His most significant and hidden relationship is with his original victim, the real Ashleigh Crichton. Having mutilated Ashleigh and stolen his face, Atlas assumes he is dead. In a final twist, a masked Cretan colonel named Herschel reveals himself to be the real Ashleigh, who then kills Atlas in revenge for the destruction of his family.
Notably, Atlas is a powerful and resourceful alchemist. He can transmute materials without a visible circle, creating large constructs of ice and launching precise lightning attacks. His abilities are formidable enough to dismantle a prison, battle the Elric brothers, and create a snowbank from a high fall to break his landing. Despite his cunning and power, his ambition ultimately leads to his downfall at the hands of the brother whose life he had destroyed.
