Description
Kayura Tsurugino is a transfer student to Hakuo Academy and a new resident of the Violet Mansion. She is a thirteen-year-old girl with short light green hair and red eyes, and her birthday is on February 14.
She was first introduced in the film Hayate the Combat Butler! Heaven Is a Place on Earth, and later appeared in the manga as the replacement for another student at Hakuo. Kayura met Nagi Sanzenin in a park, where they talked about Nagi's manga. It was soon revealed that Kayura had been living inside a tent set up in the park and was nearly apprehended by a police officer before Hayate Ayasaki intervened and resolved the misunderstanding. Following this incident, she became a new tenant in the Violet Mansion, which serves as a boarding house for several characters.
Kayura's personality is defined by her deep immersion in otaku culture. Due to her parents' interests, she has been surrounded by anime, manga, and games since birth and claims to have read over one hundred thousand manga. She is highly supportive of cosplay and is frequently seen wearing costumes of characters from various well-known anime. As with many other students at Hakuo Academy, she is a grade-skipper, indicating her academic ability. Because of her vast experience with manga, she is one of the few characters, alongside Isumi, who can understand Nagi’s doujinshi. Hayate has described her as an elite otaku.
Within the story, Kayura serves as a friend and a peer to Nagi Sanzenin. Hayate once asked her to become an advisor for Nagi's manga, a request she initially refused. However, she later gave Nagi advice about her work. Her role also includes being a source of commentary on the eccentricities of the other characters. In one instance, while eating at a barbecue, she made remarks about not taking instant feelings too seriously, which tied into the ongoing romantic misunderstandings among the residents of Violet Mansion.
Her primary motivation appears to be her passion for manga, anime, and cosplay, which guides her interactions with others. Earlier in her background, she lived in a park to be near Akihabara, likely for easy access to new books. Her key relationships include her friendship with Nagi Sanzenin and her acquaintance with other residents like Chiharu Harukaze. While she forms a friendship with Nagi through their shared interest in manga, she maintains her own perspective, notably declining to become Nagi's formal advisor while still offering guidance. Her development from living alone in a tent to becoming part of the community at Violet Mansion represents a significant change in her circumstances. She possesses no supernatural or combat abilities, but her notable abilities include an encyclopedic knowledge of manga and anime, which grants her insight into the creative process. Her name is derived from Lady Kayura, the heroine of the series Ronin Warriors.
