Description
Katta Kirifuda is the main protagonist of the Duel Masters Victory series and the younger brother of the previous protagonist, Shobu Kirifuda. His early life was marked by a traumatic beginning, as he was born in a persistent vegetative state and remained hospitalized for three years. During this time, his soul was said to wander outside his body. His revival came from an unusual source his grandfather, Katsuzo Kirifuda, who fed him a spicy curry bread, the shock of which jolted him back to consciousness and left a distinctive V scar on his forehead. This event also instilled in him a deep and abiding love for golden curry bread and a strong dislike for other types of filled breads like those with bean paste. During his recovery, he befriended a girl named Lulu Takigawa, a relationship that would become much more significant later in his life.
Katta’s relationship with his older brother, Shobu, is a central part of his character. Before disappearing, Shobu gave Katta a powerful card, Raging Dragon Lord, which Katta kept encased around his neck as a treasured memento. However, Shobu’s departure led Katta to develop a deep resentment for both his brother and the game of Duel Masters, which he blamed for Shobu’s presumed death. He is often cocky, carefree, and aloof, believing himself to be a prodigy. This exterior, however, masks the pain of his brother’s absence and a strong desire to forge his own path, separate from Shobu’s shadow.
Katta’s personality is defined by a sharp duality, triggered by the V scar on his forehead. When this mark begins to glow, he enters a state known as Victory Mode. In this mode, his personality completely shifts from his usual goofy self into that of an aggressive and highly competitive duelist with predatory, red eyes. He becomes ruthlessly focused on winning, often muttering to himself and making cutthroat strategic moves. While initially he had difficulty controlling this power, he gradually learned to master it, ultimately using it to communicate directly with the spirits of the creatures he summons during his duels.
Initially, Katta had no interest in or skill for Duel Masters, famously believing it to be a game of pyramid-stacking with cards. His journey into the game began reluctantly after a challenge from a rival duelist, Dragon Ryu. With the help of his new friends, Yohdel and Bucyake, he was given a pre-constructed deck and entered the Triple Dash Victory Tournament as the leader of their team, Team Tensai Katta. His early career was marked by a lack of knowledge and a borrowed deck, leading to many losses, but his natural talent and the latent power of his Victory Mode allowed him to win key matches.
A significant turning point came when he sought help from another friend, Benchan, to build his own deck. Benchan recognized the power of the Raging Dragon Lord card and advised Katta to build a Fire Civilization deck around it. Katta’s abilities grew rapidly, and in a pivotal duel against Onsen of the Shachihoko Group, he fully manifested a new power, transforming his Raging Dragon Lord into psychic creatures that he could summon from the hyperspatial zone. This event helped him move past using borrowed strategies and begin developing his own unique dueling style, which would later incorporate Water, Darkness, and Nature Civilizations into his primarily Fire-aligned decks.
Throughout the Victory and Versus series, Katta’s key relationships evolve significantly. His rivalry with Dragon Ryu pushes him to become a better duelist. His friendships with Yohdel, Bucyake, and the more experienced Benchan provide him with support, training, and the foundational knowledge of the game. His relationship with his family also deepens; his mother, Mai, even disguises herself as Lady Clay Pot to give him a crucial training duel, much as she once did for Shobu as the Dragon Mask. His grandfather, Katsuzo, also plays a key role as a mentor and trainer. His childhood friendship with Lulu Takigawa eventually blossoms into romance, and she becomes his wife and the mother of his son, Joe Kirifuda, who is the protagonist of the next generation.
Katta’s character development is a journey from a resentful novice to a master duelist who surpasses even his legendary brother’s skills. His hatred for the game dissolves as he discovers his own passion for it and reconciles with his brother after learning he is still alive. He confronts major threats, such as the Oracle Cult and the world-ending Dormageddon X, showcasing his growth from a boy who fought for personal reasons to a hero who protects both the human and creature realms. His signature abilities include the strategic deployment of his Fire Civilization deck, the tactical genius of his Victory Mode, and the unique power to psychically connect with creature spirits, allowing him to form bonds with them that transcend a normal duelist-creature relationship.
As an adult, Katta matures into a Cosmic Biology professor, a career that reflects his unique ability to communicate with and understand creature spirits. He retains his love for curry bread and his playful spirit, but his role shifts to that of a mentor and father, guiding his son Joe on his own dueling journey with the same protective dedication that his own family once showed him. He marries Lulu, and his adult deck remains heavily influenced by Fire Civilization, anchored by cards that symbolize his enduring legacy and power. His story is one of resilience, transforming a traumatic childhood and a deep-seated grudge into a strong sense of self, family, and purpose.
