Description
The character known as A is the Fourth Raikage, the leader of Kumogakure, the Village Hidden in the Clouds. He is the son of the Third Raikage, who groomed him from a young age to eventually take the position. A defining moment from his past was the search for a tag-team partner, a tradition for the Raikage. After numerous failed attempts, a single child was found who could match A's power, and this child was given the name B, becoming his adoptive brother. A and B, known as the A-B Combo, developed a powerful bond through their missions. During the Third Shinobi World War, A clashed several times with Minato Namikaze, the future Fourth Hokage. When his father died in the same war, A inherited the title of Fourth Raikage.
A is generally characterized as a stern, outspoken, and decisive leader. He holds a firm belief that actions and strength are paramount, and that a shinobi should never compromise or bow to another. He can be fiercely protective, especially of his adoptive brother, Killer B, whom he forbade from fully utilizing the power of the Eight-Tails out of fear of losing him. This overprotectiveness is a key flaw, as it initially prevents him from acknowledging his brother's own strength. Despite his militant and often stern demeanor, he has a very emotional and short-tempered side. This is demonstrated by his habit of bursting through walls or his own office window and smashing furniture when agitated, actions that often exasperate his subordinates. He can also be hypocritical, criticizing other nations for their rogue ninja while overlooking his own village's history of kidnapping and stealing secrets. However, he rationalizes these actions as necessary for the protection of his village.
His primary motivation is the absolute protection of Kumogakure and his family, particularly Killer B. This drive leads him to act recklessly, such as when he immediately sought vengeance against Sasuke Uchiha for the alleged capture of his brother. He even declared he had resolved to kill B himself if the situation ever called for it. In the larger narrative, A plays a significant role as a instigator and leader. His call for a Five Kage Summit is a direct response to the Akatsuki's actions. During the summit, his distrust of the other villages is on full display, but he is ultimately chosen as the Supreme Leader of the Allied Shinobi Forces, a role that forces him to cooperate with the very people he was suspicious of.
Key relationships define much of his character. His bond with his adoptive brother Killer B is the most important, evolving from a powerful partnership to an overprotective guardianship. He shares a notable rivalry with Tsunade, the Fifth Hokage, often criticizing her but ultimately respecting her as a valuable comrade. His animosity toward Sasuke Uchiha is intense, driving him to attack recklessly and resulting in the loss of his own left arm to Amaterasu, the black flames. He also has a deep respect for Minato Namikaze, one of the few shinobi who could match his speed.
Throughout the course of the Fourth Shinobi World War, A undergoes significant development. Initially distrustful of the other Kage, serving in the Allied Shinobi Forces leads him to accept them as genuine comrades. He learns to let go of his overprotectiveness when B and Naruto Uzumaki prove their strength and worth, allowing them to pass him and join the crucial battle. He also demonstrates a rare capacity for forgiveness, as he eventually recognizes Sasuke's remorse and decides to let go of his hatred.
As a shinobi, the Fourth Raikage is exceptionally powerful. He is a master of nintaijutsu, a fighting style that combines ninjutsu with taijutsu. His signature technique is the Lightning Release Chakra Mode, where he envelops his body in a layer of lightning chakra. This technique drastically stimulates his nervous system, granting him incredible speed and reflexes that were said to be comparable to Minato Namikaze, as well as providing a formidable defensive shield. His physical strength is immense, capable of lifting huge weights, shattering stone, and even breaking through the ribs of Sasuke's Susanoo. His fighting style is brutal and direct, favoring powerful wrestling-inspired moves like the Liger Bomb and Guillotine Drop. He is also known for his immense tolerance for pain, having severed his own burning arm without flinching to continue fighting. In the film Naruto Shippūden: Blood Prison, the Fourth Raikage appears as the leader of Kumogakure, a role in which he is depicted with the same authoritative and powerful presence that defines his character in the main series.
